I should really wait until Monday or Tuesday to write this blog, but whatevs.
I have submitted all my paperwork to be a sub at a nearby private high school. I had sort of decided that would be my job. Plus helping my mom coach when swim team season rolls around. But things have changed!
Out of curiosity to see my future possibilities, on Thursday I checked for science teacher positions in my county. Turns out there was more than one opening, and teachers start MONDAY. For shits and giggles I sent my resume to one middle school and one high school. On Friday I had a phone call and email from the middle school asking for an interview. I went in that same Friday (yesterday).
The principal LOVED me, and I got a really good feeling from her. She said "I feel like you're a gem that's fallen from the sky out of nowhere!" When I told her I'd need 7 days off for my India trip and how it might be a deal breaker for them she LAUGHED and said "seven days isn't a big deal! I thought you were going to say seven WEEKS!" So she gave me a really great vibe. And at the end of the interview she offered me the position. I said I'd think about it and get back to her soon.
The classroom is huge and has great windows. Each classroom has a smart board (those teachers who know will be jealous!), there's two laptop carts and an Ipad cart you can get for your classrooms plus two computer labs. The paper room is right across the hall, NO COPY LIMIT (at least at first, the guy said if they start to run out of paper they might make a limit).
The school is nearby but far enough so I probably won't run into students on my daily life. It's got a really good mix up of kids, about 70% free/reduced lunch. Lots of Spanish speakers which is good for me They have a great music program and tons of athletics. Anyways, sounds like a fun school. I'd be teaching 8th grade science only which will be AWESOME since most recently I've had seven preps or so. I told the lady "don't know what I'll do with all my free time!"
So here's the kicker. Since I'm not middle school certified, I'd be paid as a sub until I get certified. Test is in September (I really need to register), results come back around October. But then it'll take around 60 WORKING DAYS to get it added to my license. So we're looking at around five months of getting paid HALF of a shitty NC teacher salary. Which is pretty damn shitty to begin with. But, it'd be more than I'd make working as a part time sub (of course it'd also be double or triple the work!) and there's the possibility of benefits (something I forgot to ask about in the interview).
I sent the principal an email today, but I guess she won't see it until Monday. I asked to confirm how much I'd be paid a day, if I can still get benefits (not having health insurance SCARES ME!!!), and if I can get retro-pay between the results in and the certificate added to my license- that 60 working day period.
I guess we'll see!! I was thinking today that as long as I make at least a certain amount and both my SO and I can get on the insurance plan, then I should take it. It won't be much, but it'll be more.
I also try to think- I don't know if I still want to deal with behavior problems. Which you have to deal with anywhere, but if I would wait and try to get in at the private school I'd have very few behavior problems. At the public school I'll probably go back to my calling at least five parents a day routine. Which isn't a huge deal I guess. I think I did a good job handling behavior my first year, and it was just my first year. I never had a class "run all over me", just had a few kids that refused to work. I'm confident I'll do better this year. (One of my favorite things about teaching- you can get better every single day)
Finally, I looked up the curriculum and it looks like EXACTLY what I love to teach. Chemistry and biology for babies, and the hydrosphere which is lame as shit but whatevs.
Well, I'm mumbling out loud. I suppose I'll be back Monday/Tuesday to let everyone know if I take this job!!
Does it seem like I'm excited about it? I kinda feel like I am.
