We were in San Andrés island from the 12th until the 15th of August. Our visit to San Andrés was a wedding present from my mom, whom a couple of years ago, and together with my brother, had visited the island and describes it as a paradise. And that was exactly what we found in such wonderful island: a Paradise!

Our departure was from El Dorado airport in Bogota. So, we had breakfast very early in the morning, talked a couple of final things with the person in charge of the hotel-house in Cartagena, then with the manager, but this time by phone. During the assembly and our wedding itself, a few things were broken, so we had to leave clear who was going to pay for the damages. Luckily, the wedding planner said they would take care of everything since what happened was beyond our control.

The husband and I went to the airport and after checking-in, we met with one of our wedding planner’s crew members. He was there to give us some money back. Nearly 1 million Colombian pesos! All this because the husband and I were always keeping an eye on things we paid for and never saw in our wedding. Also because even though the alcohol was purchased on consignment, we did not fall into the trap of our wedding planner and his crew members.

Anyways, once we passed the security check, we walked towards our gate and the first thing I saw was my in-laws. They were traveling to Bogota and then to Peru for a couple of days. We talked and looked at wedding pictures sent by my friends until it was time to board. We said goodbye, because we were not traveling on the same flight as them. The flight to Bogota was fast and without major incidents. Once at El Dorado airport, we picked up our luggage and headed to the Copa Airlines counter for our check-in. When we arrived to our gate and 15 minutes before the scheduled boarding time, we heard through the speakers that due to aircraft maintenance, the flight to San Andrés would be delayed. Terrible! time went too slow. The husband was a bit worried about our friends, who also traveled to San Andrés but from Cartagena. They were waiting for us at the airport and we had no way of letting them know that our flight was delayed.

After a 1,5 hours delayed, we left to San Andrés and landed after almost two hours. What a thrill! since it was night, little could be seen from the air. San Andres airport is small and every time a new plane arrives, there are disorganized and endless rows at the point where tourists should deliver their special tax card that allows them to entry the island. Our transportation to the hotel was included in the tour package. The husband and I stayed at the Hotel Decameron “El Isleño”, a quite new hotel -it opened less than a year ago-. Beautiful, colorful, with stunning environments, surrounded by green, delicious meals and desserts, live music, beachfront and less than 5 minutes from the airport. Our room had a breathtaking view from where several mornings I witnessed beautiful sunrises.

Different areas

Even though we were staying in an all-inclusive hotel, our plan was not to stay at the hotel the whole time. No! We wanted to explore the island and from our point of view, the best way to do this is renting a golf cart and explore it on your own, at your own pace and without people hurrying you up. That’s why, the day after our arrival, we walked to the hotel where our friends were staying-a little more to the center of the island, about 15 minutes walk from our hotel-, we picked them up and right next to their hotel there was golf carts rental. I talked to the guy to find out whether we could stay with the car shortly after sunset. The idea was to take pictures of the sunset in San Andrés, from specific points.

With a map in hand and already installed in our golf cart, we started our journey. At first we got a bit lost trying to find San Andrés’s main road, the one that borders the whole island. Getting lost was actually great because we always found wonderful views or interesting things.

On our way to the blowhole

A fashion cow

I am a sea and beach lover. I feel such a positive energy from them. They relax me, make me dream, inspire me. Make me feel thankful for the life I have, my health, my husband, my family, my friends and not to mention that I love sea food! luckily my husband likes it too. For our friends it was the first time they saw the Caribbean Sea in all its glory. We were all so amazed that we made several stops in places that seemed interesting, worth taking pictures of or just enjoying the scenery.

On our way to the south point of the island

We were waiting several minutes at the blowhole for a huge wave to get inside the natural coral reefs tunnels and see how the compressed air would come out the famous hole. This was a tourist attraction that at first glance may seem boring, but it’s really fun and lends itself to great photos or videos. In our case we made videos, which are now part of our personal files. :-)

After having fun at this natural tourist attraction, we drove to the “Piscinita” A place with calm, crystal clear, light blue water full of fish of all sizes. We were able to feed and swim with them. It was in this place where we took our first underwater pictures with a camera our friends had. The water is cold and there is no beach, just coral reefs. It’s a great spot for snorkeling.

Yes, the water is that crystal clear and that blue. Yes, you are that close to the fish!

We continued our journey. On the road we found some other tourist attractions which didn’t seen worth paying the entry fee, so we just took photos from outside. One of them was Morgan’s Cave. My mother and several acquaintances had told me it was a rip-off. While debating whether we go inside or not, we were approached by a native who told us about “the big pond”. He invited us to visit it. This lagoon is located in one of San Andrés’ highest points. Our golf cart suffered a bit going uphill, but we made it to the top without any problems. this part was fun and added a bit of adrenaline to the journey.

Animals of the bing pond

The native kindly showed us the place, we saw several animals and ate mamón. It was the first time the husband tried this fruit and he liked it. True to be told, he feels in heaven whenever he is in Colombia and is able to eat as many juicy fresh fruits as he wants. He tells me in Germany the same stuff taste like nada. The native also recommended us to visit the first Baptist church of San Andrés and to climb to the bell tower. He assured us we would have a 360 degree view of San Andrés. And so it was. A total spectacle. The four us climbed to the bell tower and sat down to enjoy a wonderful view, feeling an amazing breeze and taking lots of pictures. It was the first day of our stay and San Andrés had stolen our hearts. Its seven colors sea is just beautiful.

Small panorama picture. Unfortunately the picture doesn’t make justice, although the view was amazing.

We honestly didn’t want to leave. We were completely amazed by the view. But as lunch time had passed and we were still without eating, we went in search of the restaurant “Donde Franscesca”. More than three friends recommended me to eat at this place and there went.

Our views from the restaurant

The restaurant is very famous. It has a Caribbean atmosphere and decor, located in a quiet beachfront location. Its owner, Francesca, approached our table, greeted us and talked to us a few minutes. The food was really amazing and full of flavor. We enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you’re in San Andrés, this is a place you must visit!

It was almost time for the sunset to make its appearance. We decided to continue our journey. Unfortunately all of a sudden the weather changed and it started to rain. Our idea of taking nice sunset photos was not possible on this day. Luckily we’d be on the island a couple of days more.
