I confess: we slept in a double bed this weekend. It was not big enough for us. I love cuddling with my SO, but I like my personal sleeping space too. Plus I get warm really easily, so... all that extra body heat made for some less than stellar sleep. I'm grateful for our king size bed.

Lyons- yes, we use our rice cooker almost every day
Dziu- Garlic crusher is a MUST!

Beds- I bought a queen size in the USA because it was the same price as a double and I figured why not. Now I don't ever want to go back! Maybe you double-beders are just smaller? My SO and I are about the same height- 5'9''ish and he's a wide body. Plus I like to sleep all stretched out. My favorite position is on my stomach with my leg bent up and my knee near my chin. Or my legs bent and crossed, like when you sit down, but laying down. When my SO isn't home I sleep with one leg off one side of the bed, and one leg off the other. I told my SO just last night that maybe in the USA we could invest in a king sized bed so I wouldn't always knock into him while getting comfortable.

I just moved in with my s/o so we recently had to figure out how to combine households. The things we really needed were a bed-decided for a queen size as I like to snuggle, but also need my own space. We found a good deal on a Serta Perfect sleeper that has a memory foam top, but also has some type of system built in that helps regulate airflow and keeps things cool basically. Here is the link in case you are interested https://www.samsclub.com/sams/glenro...7d&cagpspn=pla.

Aside from that, basically what everyone else has posted as far as small kitchen appliances are concerned. We also bought flatware, plates, glasses, cooking utinsils, as well as rugs for the kitchen, bathrooms, area rugs for the livingroom as well as dining room. We also have a backyard so patio furniture and a grill came in handy...

That's why me and my fiance have to have a queen size. He sleeps exactly in the same way you do and he likes to put his knee in my back sometimes lol.

When you guys say a double bed....do you mean a full size mattress? I'm not sure about other places, but in the US we use twin, full, queen, king, in that order from smallest to large. In college all the beds are twin size it makes things kinda uncomfortable sometimes.

Also, is there a way to avoid having to buy the box spring? Forgive me for being naive, I've never lived away from home besides college and I always lived on campus so furniture and beds were already there

Double = full. Why do you not want a box spring? It comes with the mattress for the most part and I think it helps the mattress.

The only way you could live without the box spring is to buy a platform bed. Platform beds don't require you to have a box springs under the mattress, just the mattress itself. That's what me and D have since we don't have and couldn't afford a box springs.

There might have been a few confusions with bed-sizes US and other parts of the world! Here for example we have 90cm (single), 120cm (not very much used anymore), 140cm, 160cm and 180cm, which is called "double-bed" (translated to English)! Not sure if they really have names like king- or queen-size here though.

So I think you were all talking about different doubles - just wanted to clarify!

My bf and I have a 120cm bed btw, and we are totally fine with it (we don't have much space in our flat for a bigger bed). Even the dog sleeps in the bed too ^^! But when we move out and have money for a new bed, it will most likely be 140cm, 160cm tops, because 180cm is too big, you get lost, really ^^

I only have a short tip for the moving day. Remember to bring toilet paper on the very first time in the new place. Always a bad thing to not have in handy when needed. Know you aren´t moving for a while, but still importent to remember...

You can avoid having a box spring if you have a platform-style bed. Although, when I moved out and bought a mattress (through Costco, best mattress ever!) it came with a box spring. I just ended up giving it away (donation) because I have a platform-style bed and all the nice mattresses were just as expensive as the mattress/boxspring combo.

Look around your parents' kitchen for all the items not thought about regularly but are used on a near daily basis. I bought them at HomeGoods, Marshalls, and other discount stores so that I got quality items that cost less since they add-up once you total the bill. Also, have a small FirstAid kit (band-aids, disinfectant spray, etc.) for random cuts, etc.

In the US there are a few different sizes of mattress:
                        Twin: 39"x75"
                        Twin XL: 39"x80"
                        Full (aka Double): 54"x75"
                        Queen: 60"x80"
                        King: 76"x80"
                        California King: 72"x84"

My parents had pushed two twin beds together for a long time to create their "king" size bed. (two mattresses, but one box spring & frame)

My SO and I have a double bed and like it- we've slept in a king-size and hated it. You have to roll over 2 or 3 times to find each other again lol I'd maybe get a queen size eventually. And I LOVE my Memory Foam mattress! I'd always had a spring bed, and at one point did my back in- the spring mattress made it so much worse, I was literally crying with pain until I moved to my SO and we got the memory foam. It offers so much more support!

If your bed needs a box spring, invest in a metal one. The wooden ones snap in half at the worst of times

This may be an obvious one, but a DECENT can opener. I don't know how many shitty can openers we'd gone through. But I got sick of replacing them and got a kitchen aid one and its lasted a looooong time now!

Crock pot would be my number #1 kitchen appliance. They are cheap and make making economical meals so much easier! I also love my shiny KitchenAid stand mixer, but I'm a big baker

Other things: First Aid Kit, flash lights, candles, matches for emergencies
Dresser- my SO tried his very best to get rid of a load of his crap, but there was still not enough room in the apartment for my things.
Spare Comforter/sheets/pillows for guests/your own use.

Mostly because I was considering a platform bed . We may end up keeping it though so who knows.

This is one of the biggest reasons I wanted a memory foam mattress. My mom has what was a nice pillow top in its time, but through the years of wear, it's just no good anymore. My bed is also a pillow top, and the same problem has occurred. I have scoliosis, though not badly at all, but after a while my back will bother me. I also just like how soft they are . The whole memory foam mattresses being super hot though sucks, cuz my SO gets really warm at night and I'm sure I do too (I'm guessing everyone does) so after like 10 minutes of cuddling or something we roll a little away from each other or else we'll burn up jaja!

I have a California Queen bed and I love it, it's a little bigger then a regular Queen, but a little smaller then a King sized bed. (then again just my daughter and I sleep on my bed haha).

                              I recommend
Sponges and lots of them, buy them in bulk get a package for the dishes and another package for cleaning the kitchen and bathroom
placemats for both the kitchen table and the drawers in the kitchen and bathroom (I do this at my apartment in chile it makes cleaning up easier if you make a mess in the drawer)
                              Cleaning supplies
                              Extra light bulbs
Floor lamps for the living room

Treasuretrooper <-- how I helped pay for some of my LDR expenses when I was in one.

Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but it just occurred to me:

Ziplock bags and other containers for left overs etc.

The first weekend I lived with my SO in his apartment, we didn't plan for that, and ended up keeping the leftovers by sticking the pot in the fridge :P
                                So, here you are
                                too foreign for home
                                too foreign for here.
                                Never enough for both.
