Yep, age matters when considering closing the distance! For me, it's not a reluctance to change, I like change, it's a matter of responsibility. My daughter is here, she's grown, but it doesn't mean I want to move so far away from her. If she ever has kids, I want to know my grandchildren, not be the grandma they see on Skype. I'm mid-career, he lives in a country where it's very hard for foreigners to find work, especially if you don't speak the nearly impossible to learn language. I have bills, parents that are getting up in age, my nephew, etc. We just have a lot tying us to our homes as we get older. My boyfriend is the only child of an elderly mother, he owns his apartment, and unlike me, he's not crazy about change. Also, unlike younger people, there are no work or study abroad programs for us, no student travel, working holidays, or anything else much.

I don't think it has too much to do with the imminent success or failure though, you just have to be patient and keep your expectations realistic. I'm OK with knowing it'll be a few years before we can do anything about the distance, but other people aren't OK with that. I think that has much more to do with it, your level of independence, and being alright with waiting until the time is right for one of you to move.
