    Pet-Approved Partners

Anyone else have to have a pet-approved partner?

I remember when my cat met my ex. The relationship, while he was here, literally turned into the plotline of a Hollywood film: mother brings home boyfriend, children go on mission to shoo said boyfriend away. Their interactions were absolutely hilarious but it was their interactions that confirmed that my ex was far from the one I was going to marry.

The thing is that my cat is literally on the same level as any human in my life: partner, parent, sibling. He is genuinely like a child to me and as such, his opinion is as important to me as meeting the parents. :P Of course parents don't have to receive transition time to get used to the new human, but by the time my ex left, it was pretty obvious my cat was screwing around with him to screw around (I swear, at one point, he was sprawled out on my ex's side of the bed. My ex got snarky and told him to move, my cat twitched his tail, my ex pointed to the door and said "out," my cat yawned, so my ex picked my cat up, put him in front of the door, opened the door, pointing out into the hall, and my cat gave him the "r u srs?" face, turned around with his tail in the air, leapt onto the bed, and proceeded to curl up on my ex's pillow; I swear he was smirking). Now, I get the fact my cat is more or less a rendition of a possessive, jealous lover when it comes to me - you should see how he is when I come home smelling like cat from the shelter or someone else's house :P - but I'm curious as to how he'll react to my current partner. His opinion is actually quite important to me. Now, my laddie is an animal lover and quite frankly an animal magnet, and given that and who he is as a person, I imagine my cat will settle in with him quite comfortably, but I have no doubt that there's going to be a pissing competition first. I've spoiled my cat rotten since he was a wee kitten, he comes first in my life about 99.9% of the time, and he knows it and he'll make sure my partner does too. :P

Anyone else here share the need for a pet-approved opinion on their partner? Or anyone have any stories - funny, sweet, endearing, awful, even! - about how their pets reacted to their partners/past partners on meeting them?

While I don't own my cats (they live at home with my parents), I have an enormous amount of respect for one of my cats, who has the most peculiar personality. I think if she did not approve of my partner, I would have to question my relationship a bit. When I actually own her, I will certainly have to get her approval.

Well my family has a history of the female portion of the couple wanting pets and the male side not. The female side always wins. Then the pets always love the male more.

When my SO moved in with me, I wanted a dog. My aunt just adopted a dog that was pregnant, so we took one of the puppies. Since I worked all day, my SO took care of her. And he freaking HATED that puppy. I mean puppies suck real bad, and if you don't even like puppies... it is certainly disaster. We ended up giving her to a friend who has spoiled the crap out of that dog.

Here in CR, I demanded that my SO get an apartment so we could get a dog. We did and we adopted an older puppy (5/6ish months). My SO tries so hard to dislike the puppy, but the puppy LOVES HIM. She goes crazy when he comes home from work, always sits next to him when he's on the bed, lays on his feet, sits next to him when we eat, everything. Who knows! The only time he's really nice to her is when he's plastered. Then the next day he accuses the dog of taking advantage of him

My cat ist not the "jealous type". She is happy about everyone who pays attention to her and as my SO does, they are on good terms.

One story. During my SO's visit my cat got injured when she was fighting with another cat in the neighbourhood. My SO was so touched to see her suffer. My cat was not allowed to go out the night after she got operated. since she usually does and has the want to do so she kept us awake by begging to let her out but my SO didn't complain at all.
I never thought their "relationship" was important but this made me love him even more.

My SO has ton of animals at his family home (15-20 birds, two tanks of turtles, a couple fish and two dogs). The doggies both loved me terribly and I loved them right back. There's only one bird that the family really interacts with, so he took it out to say hi. That bird..was just insane. He used to be a sweety, apparently, but one of the brothers picked on it too much and it's just angry as hell now. It loves my SO, climbs all over him and pecks at his hair. It wouldn't even let me sit beside my SO. As soon as I got within reach, it would lunge at me, screaming at the top of its little birdy lungs! I managed to coax it onto my lap, where it promptly left me a nice present.

One of my cats is generally terrified of men. However, she absolutely adores my SO. He's made it his mission to befriend my lone male cat, who is also the most skittish. He's been doing pretty well (we'll have to see if Tidbit remembers him).

His animals adore me as well. His brother's cat can be picky about who he likes, but he's always been nice to me.

My dog LOVES my SO! Last christmas, we bought him this little latex space hopper, when my SO comes into the room, he will dig out his space hopper from his toy box and go fuss my SO... so cute!

I am good terms with his dog too. I am weird in a sense that I seem to have a static charge- I zap my watch batteries and everything just by wearing it and I shock my SO all the time. I guess last time I was stroking her repeatedly, I accidentally electric shocked her =/ She is still my best friend though when I'm there, she just lies or sits next to me wherever I am sat down. Good thing me and my SO both love dogs, I can't wait to get one with him!

My SO has a cat. And she does not love me. But honestly, she doesn't like anyone except my SO. It's kind of a terror going up there because she tries to attack me constantly. I have to walk around with a water spray bottle through the entire house. My dog on the other hand loves everybody - especially my SO

My dog, Bambi, LOVES guys with dark hair and darker skin than me and my mom (cause my Dad sorta looks like that, and she had a really nice relationship with my dad when she was a puppy). So Bambi LOVES my SO.. seriously, she'll jump on his lap, push me off the couch, and glare at me as if to say "Haha I got Charlie and you dont!"

She also has a thing for his shoelaces... Every time my SO sits down and isn't paying attention to her, she'll untie his shoelaces and drag his shoes across the floor so he has to get up and get them xD

I have a cat. He's pretty scared of new people, and for the first week my SO was here, he hid in my mothers room and NEVER came out, literally never. He wasn't going to, so I had to pull him out from behind my mothers desk and force him to stay with me in the loungeroom while my SO sat on the couch. Eventually my cat was ok, and he actually became fond of him.

My cat is very anti-social and tends to be very mean. However, he absolutely adores Anthony! He will always go over to him and either sit on his lap or rub against his legs, especially when we are kissing good night lol.

I would never date anyone who my dog didn't trust or who didn't like my dog. My boyfriend has a dog and I was extremely nervous about meeting her because she's highly intelligent, doesn't like strangers and is a shy breed, but she loved me right away and is really excited to see me when I walk into his apartment.

My boyfriend was here when I got my puppy and they bonded instantly. I loved it. I even asked him if he was walking the two dogs and someone asked him about my puppy (30lbs smaller than my boyfriend's dog) would he be like "ugh this dog is my girlfriends" or would he be proud of walking her and he laughed and said he'd be proud of walking her.

My dog is extremely important to me, luckily my boyfriend's dog is just as important to him so he gets it and we get along with each others pets' very well. If we didn't there would be problems on both our parts.

My girlfriend has a cat, and it hates me. I assumed that it was because when we started dating, I had a cat myself, and a dog as well, so she smelled it and wanted nothing to do with me and would sulk every time I would try to pet or play with her. Well, both my pets have now been gone for a year or so now, and I'm hoping to go see my girlfriend for New Year's, so we'll see what happens this time around.

I have two cats, one is my moms cat (Shadow) and the other is mine (Muse). Shadow is a rescue cat from the ASPCA and is literally petrified of any human she doesn't know and interact with regularly. However within an hour of meeting my SO she was out and begging for attention. He affectionately dubbed her "slutty kitty" which was just funny bc shes is kinda a slut for his attention. We call her that now when she rubs n begs for our attention. Muse, loves most people but you know when she doesn't like someone (I.e. my mom lol). She adores my SO and gave him the same treatment she gives me. She begged to get picked up and perched on his shoulder as he walked around the house. She only does this to me, so its kind of a big deal for her to do this to him.

His cat Osiris, is the most JEALOUS cat I've ever met. This cat would go out of his way to get between us when we cuddled, when we slept, etc. Even now it seems like he knows i'm on the phone with his master, bc he loves to annoy me by rubbing his face against the mic which hurts my ears. He just wants all of his masters attention and none from me. He tried to bite n scratch at me on more then one occasion. By the time the three months was up, he was letting me pet him (kinda) bc I had been feeding him, n treating his good behavior.

                            I am beautiful with you
Even in the darkest part of me
                            I am beautiful with you
Make it feel the way it's supposed to be
                            You're here with me
Just show me this and I'll believe
                            I am beautiful with you"

What's funny is that my dog barks like crazy toward men, but when I brought my SO home, he didn't bark at all.
My dog wagged his tail when he saw him, followed him around, and kept on nudging him to pet him. xD
Maybe my dog instinctively knew that my SO is a kind and caring person.
