Anyone else have to have a pet-approved partner?
I remember when my cat met my ex. The relationship, while he was here, literally turned into the plotline of a Hollywood film: mother brings home boyfriend, children go on mission to shoo said boyfriend away. Their interactions were absolutely hilarious but it was their interactions that confirmed that my ex was far from the one I was going to marry.
The thing is that my cat is literally on the same level as any human in my life: partner, parent, sibling. He is genuinely like a child to me and as such, his opinion is as important to me as meeting the parents. :P Of course parents don't have to receive transition time to get used to the new human, but by the time my ex left, it was pretty obvious my cat was screwing around with him to screw around (I swear, at one point, he was sprawled out on my ex's side of the bed. My ex got snarky and told him to move, my cat twitched his tail, my ex pointed to the door and said "out," my cat yawned, so my ex picked my cat up, put him in front of the door, opened the door, pointing out into the hall, and my cat gave him the "r u srs?" face, turned around with his tail in the air, leapt onto the bed, and proceeded to curl up on my ex's pillow; I swear he was smirking). Now, I get the fact my cat is more or less a rendition of a possessive, jealous lover when it comes to me - you should see how he is when I come home smelling like cat from the shelter or someone else's house :P - but I'm curious as to how he'll react to my current partner. His opinion is actually quite important to me. Now, my laddie is an animal lover and quite frankly an animal magnet, and given that and who he is as a person, I imagine my cat will settle in with him quite comfortably, but I have no doubt that there's going to be a pissing competition first. I've spoiled my cat rotten since he was a wee kitten, he comes first in my life about 99.9% of the time, and he knows it and he'll make sure my partner does too. :P
Anyone else here share the need for a pet-approved opinion on their partner? Or anyone have any stories - funny, sweet, endearing, awful, even! - about how their pets reacted to their partners/past partners on meeting them?
