    Ticket price moan :(

Just looked at ticket prices for me to move back to England this summer. I have NO Option but to leave in July, when the olympics will be on... resulting in a grand total of $1500 (£1000) for a ONE WAY ticket!! For comparison - I paid £330 (~$520) for a one way flight here in late june. I looked at the STA site, and although they have cheaper flights, they vary in duration from 15-24+ hours (USA east cost to UK), with very awkward transfers (like 8 hour overnight stopover in iceland). I DIDN'T EVEN GET OLYMPICS TICKETS!! Its just such a redic price...

I'm looking at flying into somewhere like paris or belgium and getting the eurostar into london but the site wont let me check prices this far in advance.

Grrr sorry just a rant. I think its so unfair they're allowed to increase prices so much... I guess my california summer holiday is cancelled D:

(also just a warning to anyone thinking about visiting their SO in england this summer)

Wow that's a lot of money :/ I really hate it when it happens. I happened to us this winter and we could not meet! It really sucked! I had planned on visitting a week but it was just too much. Then I tried deciding for a weekend and the grand total was still over $1,200! It was INSANE! And he lives in my country, so it was even hard to believe. But there was some event going on back then and so they could take advantage of people who were craving to go and suck the money out of them.

...and when you're 19 and university gives you such a work load that makes you unable to get a job...well you feel powerless. I mean I could pay for it because I had worked hard on summer by illustrating a book and making portraits, I really could pay it. But just thinking that it was going to be a weekend...and with the time of the flights being horrible, it was a definite no. I decided to wait for a better opportunity (and fortunately it came, and I'm meeting my SO for 3 days within 26, can't wait! )

It's unfair but people will still pay that much money, for the Olympics. Luckily my girl will be coming FROM Europe so it's cheap.

I doubt it will be THAT much cheaper via Eurostar. Demand will be still be high and it's Euro Summer.

Are you near Toronto by any chance?

This website has one way tickets to London Gatwick on July 9 for about 500 CDN.

I mean, dont get me wrong, I was expecting prices to go up, but by what seems like 200%?! Its just so unreasonable... I guess I'm just really unfortunate with the timing of everything. I'm just a bit dissapointed becuase I was really excited for my summer holiday (I'd budgeted around $800 for a ticket to england and about $2000 for my holiday) so I'm either going to have to cut it short or live on pasta and oatmeal for the rest of my time here... I was planning on taking 2 suitcases with me, but that looks like a complete no no now.

Man that blows. I just spent forever and a day trying to find a flight home that took less than 20 hours (flight is only 5 hours, and these ones were full of layovers). It's so frustrating. But continue to look! You might catch a break soon

Yes flight prices are definitely crazy! I've been watching flights to England every day in hopes they'll go down but no dice

I'm planning on going on March 30 - didn't even think of the Olympics because I was going to think about going in June. Thanks for the info (though it sucks for you )

I'm sorry to hear that! That is ridiculous that they're doing that, even though I can understand why...but not EVERYONE's going for the Olympics. And to think I was annoyed I may have to pay $130 one way to visit my SO in Rochester. (There's a sale going there for $80, but the flight I need to take home is $130) Hopefully you'll be able to find an alternate option or the prices will lower a little bit.

fly into another country and fly into london with ryanair or easyjet?

This exactly why I'm having my wedding NEXT summer! Even not flying into London, any mode of public transport is going to skyrocket this summer. Even now, if I don't buy train tickets 3 months in advance, trains into London are insanely expensive- like I could fly to Paris and the flight would be cheaper then a train ticket. The Eurostar will probably not be any less expensive, seeing as people from the continent will be using that to get to the Olympics too.

you said you were booking a single ticket? have you looked at returns? because when I was booking my tickets to the US for this week, the returns were half the price of a one-way.

Oh man I hate buying plane tickets...so stressful! My vote is to deal with the long layovers. Flying Africa-USA always involves crazy long layovers in several airports. It may not seem like it now, but 8 hours actually passes fairly quickly if you bring stuff to do and enjoy wandering airports/people watching.
I also second the advice of looking for round-trip vs one-way tickets. One-ways are usually much more expensive.
                            Good luck!

Have you looked into a charter? If your willing to fly into another air port Icelandic Air offers really cheap prices for charters.
