All Because of One Text Message

"Hey babe, it's me. I'm using my roomate's phone. My phone doesn't have signal right now."

I stared at the text message, thinking about how Florida and Indiana are 898 miles away, thinking about how I couldn't wait for him to move here again, and thinking about the fact that I had no idea he even had a roomate. He had a habit of leaving me out of his business. I exhaled slightly, aggravated at realizing how hard long distance relationships were, especially the one I was a part of with Tyler(name changed). I honestly debated whether or not to even text back.

Tyler and I had met in school when we were fairly young(had liked eachother for YEARS), and after a string of events, he had to move to Indiana and we left it off on bad terms. We had reconnected after about a yr and a half of him being there, and that's how this whole thing got started...the long distance relationship I mean. He was planning on moving back down to Florida in about 4 months time. So in the meantime, we were trying this long distance thing out...but I wasn't so sure it was going to work out. He barely ever called me, and would text me a lot for money. He would text me one or two...maybe three word answers most of the time. I felt like I was the only one trying in the relationship. I waited a good half hour before texting back to his roomates number.

    "Oh hey babe. Whats up?"

I waited for a response, praying that, for once, it would be longer than one sentence.

"Hey girl, this is Tyler's roomate, Rob(name changed). He fell asleep, sorry! He was pretty tired after work."

I was slightly relieved to hear that Tyler couldn't text me back. It was almost stressful always feeling like I had to get more words out of him for emotional reassurace.

"Oh, thanks Rob. Sorry to text your phone, Tyler said he didn't have signal. Thank you anyway "

    New Text Message.

"It's ok girl, you seem to make him pretty happy so I don't mind . Anyway tell me about yourself. I gotta know who Tyler is supposedly in love with. "

And that's how it all started.

Needless to say, Tyler and I did not work out. He went through a month long time in which I never heard from him. He moved out of Rob's home because he wanted to live closer with his family. Tyler never even tried to add me on Facebook as a friend, even though he was on a lot of the time. Rob and I would text sometimes to check up on eachother, mostly him checking up on me to make sure I was alright about how Tyler was acting, and to see if there was anything he could do to help me all the way from Indiana.

    And then it happened.

I woke up from an awful dream, one that made me wake up in tears. I checked my phone first thing, and saw one missed text from Rob.

"Hey girl, you awake? I can't sleep."

The text had only been from five minutes ago.

    Frantically, I texted him back.

"Hey! Yeah, I'm up. Just had an awful dream."

We stayed up texting the whole night. And by the whole night, I mean from about 10 pm to 6 am. He talked me through my nightmare, we talked about our common interests....it was the whole getting to know you process. Me, I have always been a city girl, wanting to move to New York City more than any thing else in the whole world. But laying there talking to Rob, I couldn't help but wonder if maybe there was more to life than living in a huge city, drowning out your own individuality with thousands of people surrounding you.

This long late night texting process went on for a couple of months. I had pangs of missing Tyler once in a while, but since we had liked eachother for years, I thought that was pretty understandable. Another week went by.

"You know, I've never heard what your voice sounds like."

    I smiled.

"Well then you better find a way to call me ASAP!" (his cell phone only had texting)

I got a call from his house phone almost immediately. Can you guess how long that phone call lasted? 5 hours.

Long story short, Rob and I ended up hitting it off. I felt like I had known him for YEARS, even though I had never even met him. I saw some pictures of him, and let me tell you, he is about as cute as his accent! He fascinates me in a lot of ways, and I thank GOD every day and night for that one text message Tyler sent to me off of Rob's phone. If it hadn't been for that, I would never have even talked to Rob. Of course, Tyler tried to get me back...he was pretty upset to learn I was interested in his former roomate. I thought that would deter Rob from being with me, but nothing has so far. Not even the distance that separates us between where I am in Florida and where he is in Indiana. Of course, every day some of our conversation revolves around how much we miss eachother even though we have never met. He is amazing.

I decided to write this story out today, because tomorrow, I won't be in Florida. Tomorrow, I will be stepping off a plane in Indiana for the first time in my life, and I am going to run into Rob's arms for the first time in my life, and feel his kiss for the first time in my life. I will be there for about three weeks. God, I am so excited!! I can barely breathe or eat or sleep. Neither can he, we have been on the phone pretty much non stop for the last 3 days. I feel like he is the love of my life...like he is an extension of who I am, just a few years older and wiser than me. Wish me luck, everybody. I'm taking the plunge. And I'm not scared. I'm Just so happy that the best thing to ever come into my life happened all because of one text message.

I will write back in a few days and update you on how Rob and I are doing and what we are doing.
    Love,
    me <3

I enjoyed reading your post, such an interesting way to meet your soulmate. It's weird the way these things happen, I met my SO online and I never answer PM's from people I don't know but for some reason, I responded to his PM and it went from there. One small thing like a message impacts the rest of your life in a huge way! I felt the exact same way as you do right before I met my BF, I had never physically met him but it felt like I had known him for years. I don't want to wish you luck because I know you won't need it, the match has already been made and the feelings are already solidified. I'm excited for you and I hope your first visit is wonderful and more than everything you thought it would be. <3
