Man, you make me feel like a horrible daughter. Or maybe me family is weird?
Anyway I always sort of told my mum that I was moving abroad when I finish school. I guess I didn't even consider how she might feel about it. After all, I think it's normal and healthy to get away from your parents and become independent.
I agree with mllebamako, that it's probably a good idea to talk to them in private. Also maybe one of them at a time? I don't know, but I feel cornered quickly when it's "two against one". Make solid plans about what you're going to do, how you're going to pay for it, etc and tell them that that's your plan.
You can propose weekly skype-dates. If they're worried about you, you can suggest you'll send them a text or an e-mail a day just so they'll know you're fine.
Maybe they can visit you some time during the year?
My cousin went to Argentina for a year during high school and I think her parents visited her twice...
Also DO IT! Taking a gap year was one of the best decisions I ever made. Seriously
