Closing the distance!!!! (maybe)

There's a saying I hold true to my heart, "When one door closes another one opens" and that very well might be what's happening to us! Daniel goes to the Kansas City Aviation Tech School and we recently found out that they're shutting down for good (while opening another location in vegas). Its supposed to be shutting down after all of the students graduate september 2014 but corporate are trying to find ways to expel students asap. Teachers and students alike are already leaving because they also are taking away housing come January. They don't even have the campus on the website anymore.

Daniel was looking at places to possibly transfer to and I found an aviation Tech school a whole 30 minutes away from me! Its basically the same program but a different company. I spoke to my parents and they're more than willing to have him live with us. There's also a bus route that goes from the center of my town to the school so he can save up some money when he finds a job here to buy a car.

The only downside to all of this (besides him having to basically start all over) is that this all happened the day after I bought the plane ticket for a visit we were supposed to have next month I was wondering if I would be hit with a huge amount of fees if I changed the tickets to a one way ticket in his name at a sooner date? I'm flying US airways and United. We already spent about $600 on these and can't afford much more. His family is trying to come up with anything they can.

It is virtually impossible to change a name on a ticket. You can't transfer tickets to other people. You could call the airlines and see if you could get a partial refund but most tickets are non-refundable. Maybe you could pay a change-fee to get a ticket for a different flight in your name (maybe a trip you were planning on taking later in the year?)

Why is it impossible? I don't travel at all so there would be no reason for me to change the dates in my name. I come from a really poor family so taking a $600 hit is huge.

When does he plan on coming to live with you? And how much does a one way ticket cost? If you really can't rebook your one in any way, in order not to lose the money by not flying, it would be logical for you to visit him there, help him pack his stuff etc, and you two to go back to your home together

That what we were initially planning but the class he's in now finishes on the 18th and i'm not scheduled to be there until the 2nd so he'd have over a week with nothing to do. One way tickets can cost between $270-$500 depending on when you book it.

I'm not sure why it's impossible, but even when you're booking, airlines make sure to tell you that your ticket is non-transferable. You could always call and ask but I don't think you're able to change the name on a ticket. I couldn't tell you why. :/ You could certainly call and see about them having give you travel credit, something like good for up to a year to any destination, but beyond that, I'm not sure there's much you can do. I'll let you know if I think of something.

I think they claim that it is for security reasons but I think it's for other reasons. They wouldn't want people buying up cheap tickets and selling them through other means (like what happens with concert tickets).

Congrats on the possible distance closure. But I'm just wondering, why are these tickets so expensive? The distance between my SO and I isnt much different from yours and I am buying tickets to see him for a round trip costing only 400 some dollars. Did you try and find the cheapest tickets?

We don't have credit cards so we have to pay in cash at a travel agency in town. Plus the time you purchase them factors in too.

What exciting news! I really hope it works out for you guys!
About the ticket.. the only thing you can do is go and talk to them, maybe there is something they can do - atleast get some money back hopefully!

If it's United it's a hassle, especially if its a non-refundable ticket. You may change the flight dates but you will get hit with a $150.00 change fee each way so basically a $300.00 fee. I just went thru that and it's pointless, it's like paying for another flight.

Have you called the travel agent? Talk to her and see If your ticket is non-refundable and non-transferable, because if it is then you will have a bigger struggle changing your name on it. But, if you purchased it with cash (which you did) and it is refundable (you need to ask your travel agent), you will have more options.
If you’re not getting a good enough answer or don’t like his/her answer; I’d head straight to the airlines web page and check out their rules and regulations. But to be honest they don’t normally change the ticket names. You will probably have to book a new ticket.
