I don't think you can ever say I love you too much, personally, but some people don't need that all the time. Differing expressions for love and all that.

we always return it to each other. ^^; then again, from my perspective I know that he was in past relationships where they didn't love him, were only using him, so I feel those are important words to say. Also, it's not somethign to be said grudgingly or as a good bye. If we say it, we're saying it because we want to, not because it's automatic. most times if he says it first I want him to know I still feel the same way (because feelings can change) and I think he's the same way. It also makes me very happy to say that stuff...

I never say it haha. He never says it either. Well, we say it if we're fighting and we say it if we're drunk and amorous but I think we've only said it a few times in sincere, cool, sober moments and the atmosphere was electric! I love how it's such a heavy statement for both of us so when it is said, it makes my stomach get butterflies and I get a rush.
We do "imply" it playfully a lot though. Like... ok I know no-one else seems to understand this... but I personally find fart jokes and farting absolutely hilarious. So my BF tends to play fart pranks on me a lot like when I am sleeping he'll fart on my arm or something and wake me up (I'm actually lol-ing just remembering this) and when I get all THAT WAS DISGUSTING YOU DISGUST ME etc he says "but that's how my species shows its love. I blow love for you"

This is a really interesting discussion!
We have never been frustrated by one another saying I love you too much. I can only imagine why someone would be bothered by hearing the words "I love you" for two reasons:
1. They are uncomfortable with intimacy.
2. They feel that saying the words too often or in passing cheapens the meaning of them.
My SO and I have talked about how we use the words "I love you" and what they mean to us. He was the one who brought it up. He said that he feels it's too easy to make it into a habit, to say "I love you" before getting off the phone or when we have run out of things to say. He especially doesn't like feeling like he needs to say I love you in return to my saying it. He sees it as being less genuine if I just expect it, and he doesn't like the idea that I would interpret his feelings as having changed simply because he didn't say it today. At first, I didn't get what he was trying to explain. But I started to understand his perspective. I know our love is strong- it's not going anywhere. It hasn't yet in the 8 years we've known each other, even when we weren't together, even when we didn't talk. We both say "I love you" often, but we have gotten to the place where we don't say it every time we talk or email. I prefer now to hear him say I love you when he is able to look into my eyes (via webcam) and really say it with meaning. The other times he says it (or types it) are nice, but not really necessary.
"I miss you" is different, for me. I can understand why someone would be frustrated if their partner said it over and over. Personally, I love it when my SO says it to me, because he doesn't say it often. And I like to hear that he's feeling the same way as me. For him, he doesn't always like it when I say I miss you, because he feels that there is no reason to focus on it. He doesn't always know what to do to help me feel better when I'm down about missing him, and it's frustrating for him.
No one should ever be put down by their partner for saying either of these things.
