I think being committed enough to your SO to drop absolutely everything in your life and just rush off to them is an incredibly hard thing to do. I'm a student and am currently studying a higher national degree so of course i have commitments at school and although i don't really have to look after my mum or anything I like to stay close to her since we've been pretty much inseparable since my dad died a few years ago. But with that being said, i don't think it would be too much of a big deal to drop everything for a week or so. classes can be caught up on and people you care for will always have other people. Although i don't think my SO would ever need me to be over there, she's a very strong person and doesn't like to admit when she's struggling at all. It would more probably be her telling me something terrible had happened then me saying I'd go see her and her telling me not to worry and i have bigger priorities right now than her. It's a hard one, it really is. It's all very well to say you'd up and leave everything but honestly would you really if you actually had to? i guess that's a question you can only really answer when you're in that situation to be honest.
