I have a hearing loss... I almost never talked on the phone. I texted and Skyped with a headset. I have a phone now that I can hear fine with, and now my SO can't get me off the phone... Maybe something like that is up?

Only thing that bothers me with your so is his always working situation. He controls when you communicate etc. and that is a little concerning With the type of work he does. Have you all met up yet? See what he says on the 21st and go from there,

Well, if his phone drops calls now, I don't know that it will be so different with viber and whatsapp. Since my girl's in central american and I'm in the US, whatsapp is good because 1) the calls are free and 2) if wifi is bogged down and skype is freezing that day, we can switch to calls, which takes up less bandwidth.

That being said, there is more you can do in an App like that and it's a better experience than normal texts (i.e. sending voice notes, pictures, files, seeing if they had a chance to read the last message yet, etc.). While it seems small, every little thing helps with the distance, imo. Shouldn't be hard for him to download and use a new app. I haven't used KIK though, so maybe you already have those features..so if you're both in the us, not sure this is a big issue either way, unless his phone absolutely can't make calls.

It seems odd to me, but then again I refused to video call my guy. It was just a frightening thought. Calling or video chatting is sort of nerve-wracking. Even now, after a week of living together, I've yet to video call. I would do like you said and see his reaction come the 21st. He could be worried of an awkwardness or something.
