My sister also married a guy from India, and from what I understand, his family was more supportive than mine. My family (me included) tries to ignore things they don't like, so the engagement came as a bit of an unwelcome surprise. As the family drama ensued, his family told him to take her back to his city and marry her and take care of her so she wouldn't have so much stress. :P I met and stayed with her in-laws when I went to India, and they were very kind to me despite the language barrier.
My mom found out about my SO by picking up my phone and seeing a message from my SO when the whole family was gathered for my parents' anniversary weekend. It was nerve-wracking trying to shush her so that she wouldn't cause a scene. She was/is a bit of a controller and didn't allow us to have internet access (we did anyway) and I was three months past 18, so I had to fudge some numbers about how long I'd known him (actually about nine months). She started pushing for marriage and kids fairly soon after.
My dad was not pleased whenever he saw me talking to him. Eventually he had to meet him when he came to my hometown, and as fellow engineers, I think he won my dad with boring engineer stuff. My dad even gave him a hug the last time we met, and I've never seen my dad hug anyone besides his kids.
It'll be interesting to see how your experience pans out! Stuck in my own situation with my in-laws, I find it hard to be optimistic, but you never know how things pan out. Even the hardest of hearts can soften.
