A big step forward to closing the distance :)

So me and Tanja went to Jyväskylä yesterday and had a meeting with an immigrant advisor. She cleared up an awful lot of things for us and we're both so much more positive now!

See our main problem has been this:

    1. I can't get a job in Finland if I don't speak Finnish
    2. I can't learn Finnish unless I'm living in Finland
    3. I can't live in Finland unless I have a job
    4. I can't get a job in Finland if I don't speak Finnish
    5. I can't learn Finnish unless I'm living in Finland
    6. And so on and so forth...

So we were looking at me getting a job in the UK for 12-24 months so I could get some money behind me which would mean another 2 years apart potentially.

But the lady we spoke to said I could just move here and be put on a free full-time language course, and not only that I'd be paid approximately €600-€700 a month for doing so!

The courses last roughly 3 months, but that varies depending on which course because as you complete one stage, you move onto another which is more difficult. I should be able to speak enough Finnish after a year or so to be able to go get a job!

She said that the courses start in January, then March/April then mostly in August, so I'd likely move a month before they start, most probably next summer. Even though Tanja has kept saying I could move there in 2 months because the lady we spoke to said I could just move here in December and start the course in January

That just feels a bit too soon though, especially after thinking it could be 2 years before we got to be together! We still need to talk about our plans in detail, I've always said I wouldn't move here until everything was 100% sorted out and organised down to the last detail, it's certainly not something I'm willing to rush. But it looks like we can start planning properly now the end is actually in sight

It's always felt like we've been planning for something that is "sometime in the future" but which never really had a date or a time frame in place, but this feels like it's the first real bit of light at the end of the tunnel

This has come as a bit of a shock to both of us really, she made it all sound so easy! But it's certainly a pleasant surprise!

that's great news! and you're very sensible wanting to wait and plan things out! I bet it's hard not just to pack your bags and go when they give you that option! better to plan things out and get everything right first, before getting there and having a tonne of stress and problems to deal with, especially because at first, you won't know the language well yet.

I'm very happy for the two of you! 2 years shortened to months is great!

That meeting really turned things around for us, there was so many questions that needed answering and we got the answers we wanted! It was such a positive surprise for both of us and really left us almost speechless...

It feels unreal to think he could actually move here next summer! It's something I've only dreamed of and now it seems like it could come true

I agree with him that December would be too soon (although if he changes his mind I won't argue ) cause there's still a lot of things to sort out.. But the biggest weight has been lifted from our shoulders and for the first time we have an actual time line and an idea what to expect and how to move on with things.

Only problem now is to find him a place to work in the mean time - his dad's gonna be on him 24/7 without a doubt

I'm so very happy right now, you guys have no idea

            Great news.

I want to say that it is wonderful that you both are taking it sensible when it comes to when this will happen. Sorting/thinking/planning and moving at a reasonable time is a mature and wise choice.

You both know you are going to be together and you now know how possible it truly is and when you can do it!!!

There's something called an adaptation period which lasts for 3 years and in that time you'll be adapted to live in here.. You take language courses and learn about the culture and people, learn to drive in here etc. As long as you are on one of the unemployment office's courses you'll get the adaptation money Andy mentioned above.
If you live together with Elina her income will effect it though.

But basically what she said was "move here and after that we'll get things sorted out for you", lol!

Oh and there's things about insurance and residency permits and stuff but Andy can talk to you about that

Oh, Andy and Tanja, I'm so happy for you both! :3

I know what you mean about the sudden feeling. Matt and I realized I could move over pretty much immediately on the right visa, but I want to get things sorted here before I do, so I set May 20th as my day out - I should have all of my stuff sorted. And let's face it, moving cross countries is a big deal.

                        *hugs to you both* Eee!

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying good-bye so hard!

I don't get one thing though.. why haven't we found out about this sooner.. why has no one else said anything about any of this, I even went to the employment office and they didn't say anything about this O_o feels like.. I don't know, it's kinda hard to believe hah. That it could be that easy

We're totally going back there when we're in Finland together to find out more stuff about this for us

...and how great would it be if Andy and Sam could go on the same course together
