As one of citizen from the 3rd world country that also lined up among with mid east country and with all terrorism happened in Indonesia lately.... i did find applying visa is a traumatic thing that i have to deal with... because my SO come from Europe, its not easy for me to ensure the Germany govt. that i will return after my visit back to Indonesia.

Its normal that they feel scare that we will be illegal immigrant or we will cause trouble because running out of money while traveling there. Last time, i had to attach my 3 months salary check with official stamp from HRD (my saving balance... is less than US$250 so i never attach it) a letter from my Department head said that he acknowledge my "vacation" and mention i took 21 days off from office, and shall return after the holiday. I also attach papers from HRD describing my employment status and again, the length of holidays that i could take. I also had invitation letter from my SO declare that he will bare all the expenses and will took responsibility of me (short of).

This is short of "attachment" to the origin country, a REASON for me to get back to Indonesia after my holiday. That i had a good job in Indonesia so i wont be looking for job in Germany. And my SO letter assure them that i wont cause trouble during my visit in Germany, and if i did he will be responsible for my actions (if i break laws etc?).

Maybe this is what they looking for. If its possible, why can't your SO ask letter from university that explain he is a student and somehow after the vacation he will return for class? letter from parents maybe? something that he had also help like motorcycle papers, cars? some of his belonging that wait for him at home?

I dont know if the rules are the same..... bottom line is the US govt doesn't want your SO cause them headache... and he should prove that he wont!

....hope he will get the visa tho...

Why not send him a webcam as a gift? They're pretty cheap nowadays, and you'll have better access to get him one.

The term "third world" and "first world" is an antiquated phrase by now, so I find it offensive only because it's so out-of-date. Under-developed, undeveloped, developed, etc. different.

My SO is from Brazil and I've seen stuff around his part of the country and it definitely looks like they're more well-off than I am here in the USA, but that's the thing. In Brazil there are people that have SO MUCH and the ratio of that to people that have so little is MUCH MUCH MUCH greater than what we have in the USA. It's sad, but it's how things happen there, unfortunately.

Anyway, send him a webcam. There's a couple on Amazon as cheap as $4.60.

Peru has really annoying mail regulations... You aren't supposed to send electronics, among other items like anything that says bad things about the Peruvian government and like... I think playing cards were on the list, too. It's really silly, Peru has the longest list of prohibited items I have ever seen. There might be a way to send one, but I'm not that concerned. He has a mic and he can take pics... And sometimes he records videos for me on his phone. We wanted to have him come here and just buy a webcam here, since it's cheaper and most of the stores in Peru are a year our two behind in technology and price (from what he tells me).

Oh that sucks. Sorry, then. I'm not sure what else to suggest. And about the getting denied thing - my boyfriend's brother's girlfriend in Brazil was denied access to the USA so she couldn't go on vacation with them here. I'm not sure why, but I think she's been denied several times. I'm not sure what to suggest about that, though.
