That's awesome! Congrats and you should be very proud of yourself. My SO and I are both native English speakers, but I studied abroad and am close to fluent in Spanish. I remember the pride I felt when I made it through an hour long conversation with my host parents without using my dictionary. Lucybelle is also right- just wait til you start dreaming in Portuguese! The first time I had a dream in Spanish it was crazy. I was really confused though because people who don't speak Spanish were speaking in my dream.

Good on you!! Both of us only speak English, so I can only imagine what a huge accomplishment this is. You must be so proud of yourself

well... my SO is from the US so he speaks English.
but a bit different than what I've learned in school... I learned British English.
it seems easier for me to speak English than for him to speak Dutch... don't think he will ever want to learn, as I am going to live with him as soon as possible.

Guest repliedAww, good for you!
My SO speaks English with almost no errors at all so we've always communicated in that. I think it's going to be a while before I can hold a lengthy conversation with him in his native French, but I'm practicing!

Awesome!! Just wait til you start dreaming in Portuguese, that's always fun
By the time I met my SO I was pretty fluent in Spanish. We have always mainly communicated in English because he wants to improve his. Just lately we've finally started talking in Spanish and I'm really enjoying it.

That's pretty impressive. I would be proud of myself, too
I'm really looking forward to the day I'd be able to converse with my SO in his language. It's not gonna happen for a long, long while, though. He was supposed to start learning French (which isn't my native language, but close enough) but he never got around to it. Maybe one day.

So happy! (about language)
I'm so happy I just have to share!
I just had a 1 1/2 hour long phone conversation with my SO in his language! It was the very first time that I tried actually speaking Portuguese and I never thought I would be able to keep a conversation going so soon and for that long (and especially not on the phone).
It was the best feeling ever being able to communicate with him in his own language and it's almost like I fell in love with him all over again, the Brazilian part of him, not just the international English-speaking part
Those of you who learned a new language for your SO, or had your SO learn a language for you, how did you feel the first time you were really able to talk in the new language?Tags: None
