My SO speaks English but has learned Chinese at adult age so there is hope that he will learn Finnish, too! My ex, also American was living here for 16 years and learned his Finnish okay. He doesn't really need it anymore. Shame language skilled cannot be transferred between persons... but luckily my kids speak both languages so that's at least good for them to learn to know each other.

That is so cool! Congratulations
My SO speaks almost fluent English, so we converse in English at the moment, but I am trying to learn Swahili. It's very difficult mind you, there aren't many learning aids out there for Swahili, I contacted the School of African and Oriental Studies in London requesting what they could help me with, but they wanted to charge me £70 an hour just for very basic lessons! I think I'll stick to the phrasebook and the internet for the mean timeIf anyone knows of any good webpages that also do some of the more obscure languages, please let me know!
I know a few words already, and have texted him some goodnight messages in Swahili before. When I visited him on New Years I managed to crack a joke (albeit a one-liner) in Swahili which caused the room to explode with laughter, and earn me some serious girlfriend points. We hadn't been together long at this point, so I think it went down well that I was trying.
I'm hoping that I can speak a few clumsy sentences before he gets here to visit my family, as it would be lovely to surprise him. But well done to you (and everyone else) who is already well on their way there.

Good for you!
My SO is very curious about my Turkish. I understand more than I speak. I know a lot of words but the grammar is slower. I am less shy as the time goes by, though. Sometimes I dream in Turkish sounds.
His Norwegian is worse than my Turkish, he can only say phrazes like "You are the most beautiful girl in the world ".Last edited by differentcountries; May 28, 2014, 12:22 PM.

Very nice! That's a big dealAfter three years, all I can do in Finnish is curse at you, or ask where the bus, bathroom or bank is. Oh, I can order beer, too. Someday, I'd love to have a conversation like you did, congrats!

Congratulations on a great accomplishment! I am new to the site and to the international postings. My SO is Turkish, but in US at this time (though we have had month separations with him abroad). We lived together for almost two years...him teaching me some Turkish and mostly me trying to teach myself! My son and I speak in Spanish and English, so we mostly spoke English together and tried to teach him Spanish, but now with SO in FL, he is trying harder to learn Spanish...so we are on a race to see who learns our other language faster! My son is also trying to learn Turkish...I think he gets the accent better than me

Me and my SO both speak native English, but due to studying abroad, studying since HS and living in the country. I'm fluent in Japanese. My honey hasn't been studying it at the moment (due to being busy) but he's so eager to learn it! I always encourage him!! I even teach him bad words and slangBut it's always nice to learn or even attempt to learn your SO's language it shows a lot of respect instead of the whole I won't learn another language cause I know English is the international language arrogant type mindset.

Guest repliedMy missus already speaks my language at a highly proficient level (English). I've tried to learn Estonian, but it's a language that will take forever to learn. It would be more likely that we learn a third language, Estonian is just brutal.

Thanks everyone. Haha, yeah I can't wait for those Portuguese dreams! This will actually be my third foreign language, but it's the first that I'm learning all by myself, no classes or anything.
You're lucky those of you that speak the same native language, it makes communication a lot easier from the start!
I just think it's very interesting how people change according to what language they speak, almost like we "act our language". I guess I just feel like I got to know him a lot better by speaking portuguese with him..
