    So happy! (about language)

I'm so happy I just have to share!

I just had a 1 1/2 hour long phone conversation with my SO in his language! It was the very first time that I tried actually speaking Portuguese and I never thought I would be able to keep a conversation going so soon and for that long (and especially not on the phone).

It was the best feeling ever being able to communicate with him in his own language and it's almost like I fell in love with him all over again, the Brazilian part of him, not just the international English-speaking part

Those of you who learned a new language for your SO, or had your SO learn a language for you, how did you feel the first time you were really able to talk in the new language?

That's pretty impressive. I would be proud of myself, too

I'm really looking forward to the day I'd be able to converse with my SO in his language. It's not gonna happen for a long, long while, though. He was supposed to start learning French (which isn't my native language, but close enough) but he never got around to it. Maybe one day.

Awesome!! Just wait til you start dreaming in Portuguese, that's always fun

By the time I met my SO I was pretty fluent in Spanish. We have always mainly communicated in English because he wants to improve his. Just lately we've finally started talking in Spanish and I'm really enjoying it.

        Aww, good for you!

My SO speaks English with almost no errors at all so we've always communicated in that. I think it's going to be a while before I can hold a lengthy conversation with him in his native French, but I'm practicing!

well... my SO is from the US so he speaks English.

but a bit different than what I've learned in school... I learned British English.

it seems easier for me to speak English than for him to speak Dutch... don't think he will ever want to learn, as I am going to live with him as soon as possible.

Good on you!! Both of us only speak English, so I can only imagine what a huge accomplishment this is. You must be so proud of yourself

That's awesome! Congrats and you should be very proud of yourself. My SO and I are both native English speakers, but I studied abroad and am close to fluent in Spanish. I remember the pride I felt when I made it through an hour long conversation with my host parents without using my dictionary. Lucybelle is also right- just wait til you start dreaming in Portuguese! The first time I had a dream in Spanish it was crazy. I was really confused though because people who don't speak Spanish were speaking in my dream.

Thanks everyone. Haha, yeah I can't wait for those Portuguese dreams! This will actually be my third foreign language, but it's the first that I'm learning all by myself, no classes or anything.

You're lucky those of you that speak the same native language, it makes communication a lot easier from the start!

I just think it's very interesting how people change according to what language they speak, almost like we "act our language". I guess I just feel like I got to know him a lot better by speaking portuguese with him..

My missus already speaks my language at a highly proficient level (English). I've tried to learn Estonian, but it's a language that will take forever to learn. It would be more likely that we learn a third language, Estonian is just brutal.

Me and my SO both speak native English, but due to studying abroad, studying since HS and living in the country. I'm fluent in Japanese. My honey hasn't been studying it at the moment (due to being busy) but he's so eager to learn it! I always encourage him!! I even teach him bad words and slang But it's always nice to learn or even attempt to learn your SO's language it shows a lot of respect instead of the whole I won't learn another language cause I know English is the international language arrogant type mindset.

Congratulations on a great accomplishment! I am new to the site and to the international postings. My SO is Turkish, but in US at this time (though we have had month separations with him abroad). We lived together for almost two years...him teaching me some Turkish and mostly me trying to teach myself! My son and I speak in Spanish and English, so we mostly spoke English together and tried to teach him Spanish, but now with SO in FL, he is trying harder to learn Spanish...so we are on a race to see who learns our other language faster! My son is also trying to learn Turkish...I think he gets the accent better than me

Very nice! That's a big deal After three years, all I can do in Finnish is curse at you, or ask where the bus, bathroom or bank is. Oh, I can order beer, too. Someday, I'd love to have a conversation like you did, congrats!

Thanks! It helps to have some pressure on though, I'm moving to Brazil to finish my degree, so I have a few months to learn enough Portuguese to be able to pay attention in class...haha
