    anyone dating someone in germany?

    hi everyone.

this is funny! i used to use this forum a while back when i was in a ldr with my ex bf. that didnt work out in the end unfortunately, but i am over it.

SO here i am again. i met this guy while i was travelling this summer at a big music festival in belgium, we had a epic night together.. he got my number and i expected him to text me the next day, unfortunately.. i never got his text message and i never saw him again =( HOWEVER. a month later after i was back home, i noticed I had his number the whole time ( i was drunk at the time ok!) and i texted him right away.... and he sent me a picture of all the messages he sent me that i never received because he had the wrong number!! since then we have been talking, all the time, skyping ect.. and we are falling for each other even though we have only met once.

anyways. i am planning on moving to hamburg, germany this summer to try and make things work. has anyone moved to germany? how hard is it to get a visa? is knowing german fluently essential to find work?

i want to go to a language school while i am there, and maybe go to school for a semester since i can do an exchange with my school.

also does my story sound a little crazy? can you fall in love with someone over the computer?

I can't relate to the Germany part but girl if you're crazy then a whole lot of us are too!!! I think it's extra easy to fall in love online...people are more open behind a screen and you get to really learn who someone is when all you have are words.

    Met online: 1/30/11
    Met in person: 5/30/12
    Second visit: 9/12/12
    Closed the distance: 1/26/13!!!

      Hello, welcome to lfad
I don't think it's crazy at all. A lot of people here got to know their SOs that way.
I'm German and I have a few American friends so maybe I can help you with a couple of your questions. I'm not entirely sure about the visa but language schools will be happy to employ you for English classes and you don't need German for that. In fall, spring and summer there are kid's camps, where you can earn a lot of money within a short time. A friend of mine is Canadian and she has worked as a freelance English teacher for 8 years now. For other jobs it might be difficult but again it depends on your profession.

I'm sorry I don't have the answers to any of those questions.. but was the huge music festival you fell in love at by any chance Tomorrowland.. if so that is an epic place to meet someone and fall in love. I am going this summer and I am soooo soooo excited. I'm sorry for getting off topic, just very excited and if it wasn't Tomorrowland you were referring to, sorry again and good luck in Germany, I say it's not crazy just go for it and move there, then you can go to Tomorrowland ever year!
        Met: July 2002
        Said "I Love You"s: October 2012
Hopefully closing the distance: April 2013

She said you make me better boy, I just mailed you a letter boy, and oh, so you know, I'm still in your sweater boy.

Canada doesn't have any reciprocal visas with Germany. I went to be an au pair but should have got my visa before hand. I didn't know a word of German and almost was rejected the visa but the Mother I was supposed to work for talked them into giving it to me. Essentially you will have to either get a study visa, you can study German it is about 500 euros for an intensive study course and you can only work part time on it (I was going to get this one but I couldn't afford to live working part time) or apply for a work visa which is hard to get because an employer has to prove that no one else that holds a european passport either wants the job or is fit for the job, which is extremely though. Good luck but your options are limited.

ETA - Unless you find childcare work you definitely need to be fluent in German.

I think I am going to go to a Language school.. then do a semester as an exchange student. I don't have any special talents in the work force so I feel like it would be very hard to get a job!!

What about like house-keeping..... or bussing at restaurants.

Do it! I'd advise having four computers to get one ticket. Thats what I had to do last year, and the popularity has tripled since the video came out!

Exchange is probably your safest option. It's the most convenient way for me to move (much) closer to my GF in Europe.

Also, you can actually get a Working Holiday Visa in Germany. It lets you stay in Germany for 1 year, plus you can work during that time.

I think going there on a student or exchange visa can be the best option for you. Now, I have no idea how easy/hard it is to get it. I assume that as long as you have in order all the paperwork they ask for (Visa application form filled, language school admission letter, financial statement, etc), they won't reject it. However, check the website of the german embassy in Canada for more accurate information.

The longest I lived in Hamburg was a month, while taking german classes at the local Volkshochschule. It is -I think- the 2nd largest city in Germany, somehow multicultural and with many things to offer.
You will be fine with your english, as most germans -new generations- can speak english pretty well. Practicing some german before you move next summer, would not hurt you, instead it can give you a sense of what to expect -language wise- and you will not be so lost in the classroom. Check out the Germany group they have here in LFAD, there you can find more info and also get to know germans and people dating germans whom are part of the community.

I never worked in Germany, so I can't really offer you advice on that. For more information you can check sites like https://www.expatica.com/de/main.html and for study opportunities you can check https://www.daad-canada.ca/en/

Good luck and welcome to LFAD!!

From my friends experience with exchange studies, once you have the offer from the university in the country of choice, you are going to get a student visa without fail.

My boyfriend lives in Germany too, and I've been there a couple of times. I don't know about the visa, but I do know that the younger generation of germans tend to speak pretty fluent english, and are always happy to practice it!
