Flying to the US without a job?

Hey guys, long time no see!

Unfortunately im not here to say me and my ex have gotten back together. The same issue persists (the distance of course), which makes a relationship untenable for her since she is unable to deal well with me not being physically there (which as crappy as it is that two people who love the heck out of each other cant be together for that sole reason, is understandable as I know, as im sure you all do, how difficult that can be to deal with).

But anyways getting back on point, we have remained very close friends, and we're planning on meeting this August/October with me probably flying over to her (a holiday and seeing my love, whats not to like!). Remembering the research I did back in the day, I also remember how sketchy US customs can be at times. So the deal is; id be flying alone and its quite possible I will not have a job by that time (I currently do work, but my contract is due to expire in July, so unless I can jump right back into a job its likely ill be unemployed by the time).

I know having a job and letters from them saying you have a job to return to would aid my journey through customs etc, would me not working (thus no 'date hes returning to work' letter) be a bit of a hinderance? Would a 1-2 week stay (more likely 1 week) with me being able to provide a return ticket see me through ok? I just dont wanna book tickets and tell her when im coming and everything, only to be turned back simply because customs are way too suspicious over somebody who can barely get out of bed in the morning!

Hope everyone's doing good . Cheers guys.

I don't think you need to worry, just say you're a tourist, visiting friends (which IS true!). The UK isn't considered a very big illegal immigration threat, and there is a ton of tourism between our countries, so a young guy checking out the Pacific Northwest isn't very suspicious. Tell 'em you're doing some hiking and sightseeing, you'll be fine. If I remember correctly, you're a pretty young guy, so a student going on a parent paid holiday is a normal situation

      Hey Moon! Hope you're good

Does seem a pretty normal scenario doesnt it! Hopefully they'll be smart enough to know that it is . When you put it like that really it should be no bother, was just thinking if it would make it significantly a safer bet to have a job as well, then id make the moves now to have one during that period.

I like to think im still young , have graduated now though and I sure as heck wish my parents were paying for this! Gotten my ESTA approved and I guess just a case of sorting dates and booking tickets now .

I went into the US 8x in less than 2 years and they never asked me for any paperwork. When they ask me what I do, I just say I'm a student which I can proof if needed but it's never gotten to that point. And I told them I was visiting my bf too for the last few trips. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Countries under VWP get less suspicion. As long as you have a return ticket the questions they ask are minimal.

Yeah, if you show you have your return ticket it shouldn't be a problem. I'm planning to fly to US too but it needs so much planning due to my residing in Asia, to apply for that darn visa!

its really nothing to worry about. if your stay was 6 months or longer, it would be a different issue. but a short visit as this is not going to make anyone bat an eye.

You'll have no problems. My bf has been visiting me for 3-4 weeks at a time for the past year and a half, going back to the UK for 1-2 months, with no problems. He had return tickets every time, so the way I see it, it was like he was just "going on vacation." We've only just now run into problems on this past visit when he was told he'd need to get a tourist visa next time, whoopsie haha.

Hope your visit goes well! I remember you from your other posts, and I'm glad to hear you and she have been able to stay friends.

I have to disagree. I was travelling without a job and was asked repeatedly "how can you afford to travel?" In fact upon entering my city airport I was detained and questioned because of this. I'd have your return ticket ready.

Yeah read a couple of stories on the same kinda thread as this. From what I can gather it seems its very much a matter of being fortunate enough not to get some total jobsworth who cant understand that a 22 year old guy might wanna see some of the world! I'll definitely have my return close to hand. Do they not imagine that people might I dunno... save their money? Heck knows companies are incredibly dumb these days, tis what it is.

Ah that's particularly encouraging then, seems you guys have done pretty well with it! Thanks Im pretty glad we've managed to keep as close as we are too, we were always crazy close as friends as well and going without that would be kinda tough.

Anyways thanks everyone, ill be going with it anyways. It is just a friends trip, but there's really no way im not gunna go and see someone who's been a part of my everyday life for over a year. Shall be booking everything soon enough and will probably flood here with essays about it after . Keep good with the LDR's everyone
