90 day fiancee, Thoughts? Opinions?

At first glance, there's really only one couple I'm rooting for and that's Russ and Paola. Maybe because the story is similar to my nephew.

My overwhelming question in all of this: why apply for the K-1 Visa and bring your fiance to the States if either of you are unsure? Mike from Cleveland said he bought Aziza a return plane ticket, in case it didn't work out. If you're in love and committed, especially after all the talking, Skyping, etc, why wouldn't it work out?

And they all say the same thing - 90 days is not a lot of time to decide....no it isn't, but I would think you had already made the decision when you went through the time and cost to get the visa. Mike from Cleveland said he took out a second on his house to finance her visa.

I think Mike from Cleveland is getting screwed here, and not in a good way! The others seem relatively legitimate (In the context of TLC), I'll probably keep watching at least until The Walking Dead comes back on.

I was responding to BabyGund's post. But since you've asked, it's only been one episode, so it hasn't portrayed them really in any light yet, or at least not from what I saw. I admit, I didn't pay attention to that aspect at all though, as I kind of don't care how they're portrayed, since I couldn't care less if people choose to judge mine Some families and friends are skeptical, it looks like the others are trying to be accepting, but they have only touched on the backgrounds and the women getting to the US.

Keep in mind, it's TLC. They don't portray anything that isn't sensationalized, or over the top. Anyone hoping to get an accurate account of LDR's from this show are watching the wrong channel. We can moan and complain about it being a negative connotation of LDR's, but nobody is listening, as long as people are watching.

Also, it's only portraying LDR's where the guy is American, some seemingly a bit older than the girl, and the girls are from what we'd consider poorer countries. It's only showing a very slim slice of the LDR world (but the one that'll get ratings!).

I don't think it is. The show's focus, at least in this first episode, isn't the LDR aspect before they got here. The only LDR aspect is how they met.

Each of the men are shown talking to someone in their life about the fiancee and how they met. Alan from Las Angeles goes to Brazil to bring his fiancee back to Los Angeles, Mike from Cleveland goes to New York, where his fiancee is flying in and they spend some time there, and Russ from Oklahoma meets his fiance at the airport when she flies in. This episode is heavy on Russ and Paola, as he takes her home to meet his parents for dinner after she flies in. It's tense. His family is not on board.

So it's really just the first 12 hours they've been in the country.

But again, the overarching theme of "I really hope it works out" is just unsettling to me. I wouldn't go to all that trouble to get the K-1 if we were not on the same page to make this work.

I also have a lot of trouble with this part. The visa is called the "Fiancee visa" for a reason: you use it if you have the intent of getting married. It's not 90 days to see IF you want to get married, it's 90 days to get married, period.

I'm watching it now. I had work early and recorded it so I could see it later. I think everyone needs to keep in mind that this is a TV show; they have to say things like, "90 days isn't enough time" and show people who have doubts. They wouldn't get ratings if everyone was super confident! It's the same with saying a billion times that the one guy is Mormon.

I don't like that they're only showing women coming on a K-1 visa but again, ratings will be higher by just showing women. So far I think the show is okay; I hope they'll do more with it.

I thought that was odd too, that none of them had visited the U.S. before. I wouldn't just move to another country having never visited before but maybe they weren't able to? I don't know. I'm sure the network picked these people for a reason to cast and we will find out more. They weren't going to cast people who had spent 6 months in country, were squeeky clean, and such. I don't like that the one woman hasn't met that one guy's sons and they're about to get married!

Many people can't get tourist visas for the US. My husband, for example, would definitely be refused a tourist visa so we've never tried.

Yeah, I was going to say (similar to mllebamako) that a lot of people have great difficulty getting tourist visas, especially when they're from developing countries. We've given up trying after two failed attempts while he was a full-time student at one of Peru's top universities, working on a research project (and getting paid for it), and active member of a national sports team while owning a portion of the deed to his house with no family outside of Peru. If that doesn't say ties to the country then idfk what does.

I saw a clip yesterday on The Soup (one of my favorite shows) and it just made me so pissed off. It showed this guy who is like "I bought her a round trip ticket in case she changes her mind". And I'd definitely be cool with that if they were VISITING. But AGGH! The visa is not to decide whether or not to get married, the visa is to get married. They need to make a show how USCIS is screwing up married people's lives and keeping them apart for 1.5-2 years while processing visas.

I streamed the first episode and I actually found it interesting (probably because my guilty pleasure is reality trash tv). I feel sorry for Mike though as just the impressions I was getting it didn't really seem that genuine "I didn't really have any romantic feelings until after my work visa was denied".... Really?

I understand your frustration. I saw the same clip and thought it was really funny. The chick was like "whatever, man. I'm over it. Leave me alone"
