Always me, unless we're meeting in a "neutral" country. I don't really want to have him here.

OP: if you're really scared about traveling alone and being in a strange environment.... do it anyway. It builds character

I travelled first, because I wanted to. Then he came here.
We have done it nearly always in turns. He just left after our 7th "date" together.
I have visited him three times and he has travelled to me four times. Guess it's my turn next.

I flew over to my SO first. We were not even dating but just friends. I doubt we would have ever been anything else if I had not taken that step. It was daunting and scary as all heck at first. I considered it to be an adventure. One, I am happy to say, brought me and him closer than ever and now we are planning a life together.

Thank you so much everyone for responding. Firstly, I want to let you all know how brave and totally awesome you are to me! I tried to respond individually to all of you but I passed out and fell asleep. Everything I typed was gone when i woke up. Soo sorry.

My SO is heavily involved in polo sports so his schedule is really tight. Like you all said I have family there so I'm not alone and will reach out to let them know im coming. I have three options for a place to stay also. So thanks to you all I am proud to say that I am going to see my SO in two weeks. He went to Argentina for the weekend and couldn't really talk much this weekend. I can't wait to tell him my decision!!

Thank you squeeker. I never thought I would end up in an LDR again but this time around feels so different but in a good way. I'm actually excited that he is equally excited yet supportive of whatever decision I make. He was shocked I wanted to even see him. We were just talking on Skype and I blurted it out. He told me he felt like the luckiest man alive to be with me. I guess he didn't think I was interested this whole time being together? lol

I know this sounds far fetched but I saw a shooting star one night sulking about my ex. I wished that I would find a good man and I found him. I'm the one that feels like the luckiest girl in the world.

looking forward to get to know you and everyone else here!

I did too It was my first time ever on a plane and I went alone, I was 21. I think the only situation in which I would have been uncomfortable with going first would be if it were to a country where I did not speak the language.
Happily married to the little Canadian boy I never thought I'd meet in person

Zephii I didn't even consider that. Wow I think I would be uncomfortable doing that.

I went to the Netherlands first time and did not speak a word of it. I was lucky that most Dutch people can speak English, but to this day it is still daunting being somewhere where regardless of a year's of Rosetta Stone I still don't know what anyone is saying 90 percent of the time. I just look at it as part of the sacrifice you make to be together. I have an app on my phone that will translate if needed and the rest of the I just use what I know and wing it.

I guess that include most countries in the world... Or do you mean somewhere where few people speak even broken English? I must admit I am a bit scared of the idea of me and SO meeting in his Turkish home town where they don't cater tourists as much. I guess I will benifit from learning at least basic Turkish.
I made love to him only twice, she thought and looked at the man laying asleep beside her. And yet still it is as if we have been together forever, as if he has always known my life, my soul, my body, my light, my pain

I've always flown to him and I HATE flying! But I saw it as an adventure, a challenge, and it made me feel so good that I DID it -- and survived! hahahahaha!!
                        February 2012 -- met online
August 2012 -- he said "I love you."
April 2013 -- met in person
                        June 2013 -- broke up
                        July 2013 -- back together
                        August 2013 -- 2nd visit
                        October 20, 2013 -- He proposed!
                        April 22, 2014 -- Married/closed the distance!

It would yes. But then, I'm not interested in trying to make a relationship work with someone from a vastly different culture or religion, so the likelihood of that having happened to me were pretty slim. But if it did, I'd be learning the language to a point where I was comfortable before I went. In my opinion it wouldn't be very smart to be a young woman meeting some stranger off the internet for the first time in a place where she had no way to ask for help if something went wrong. There's risk, and then there's unacceptable level of risk

It's different from your situation though, you've met your SO in person a couple of times and you trust him. I'm also willing to bet you have better life skills and more traveling experience than I did at 21

That story sounds familiar... hmm... In my defense, however, I was never without a means to find help.

I will probably end up travelling to him first, but I'll be going with other people. Even my SO said I shouldnt travel to/or be in Egypt alone. I think that applies to most places though. Can never be too careful!
