I'm in the same boat! I felt pretty uncomfortable when I first went to visit my SO. His parents don't speak English at all, but they still tried to use some words when communicating with me. One of his sisters and her hubby know English and tried to make me feel welcome by using it. Most of the time though, everyone spoke German/Bavarian with each other and I was feeling left out. I've been studying German off-on over the past year or so but it's been difficult. I was using Rosetta Stone for awhile but it was so slow and repetitive that I kept losing interest. Now I'm using Duolingo, and I like it much better. I'm still really shy about speaking it, but it always made me excited when I was listening to them and I could understand certain words. When it was time for me to leave, I got hugs from both his parents as they were both struggling not to cry (his Mom failed though lol)...I guess they liked me.
