When my SO proposed, he used a family ring. We didnt discuss the ring before hand at all, but i would always have wanted a surprise!! Strange thing is, the ring was the exact right size and he'd never had it change to my size either. Freaky eh? Maybe it was always meant to be lol

I'll say that you were meant to be! I want my SO to pick out the ring, but he's not super confident when it comes to anything fashion related. Guess that's what happens when your boyfriend has 2 brothers! He'll probably take one of my friends that he's close to as well. Ultimately, he should be the one to pick it out. Normally I hate surprises, but I will be surprised on this!

Surprise and propose with a ring. I'm sure he could figure out pretty quickly looking at what I wear now as to what I would like. Long as its not yellow or rose gold, I'll be happy haha. And no diamonds >_> But yeah.. I think surprise is so much more romantic and I would just be happy to have a ring.

I want him to pick it, but we've discussed what I like. I showed him a ring I do like, though so he has something to go off of. I would like anything he picks, but I have a vision in mind of what I'd like my ring to look like a little bit. I don't want a real diamond, I want cubic zirconia, I want it to be silver because its not expensive and I want a three stone ring to represent past, present and future.

I don´t know. This is an interesting question for us because apparently they do rings differently where my SO is from. HOWEVER, going on the assumption that he was going to propose Canadian style, I´d like it to be completely a surprise!!! I wouldn´t want to go browsing with him before at all, because then I would be worrying/waiting for it. Ideally, I hope he goes to my best friend for advice if that ever happens, because she knows my taste (from ring style, to how I would like to be proposed to) the best out of anyone, and she also loves surprising me, so it would be ideal.
If we were going with his way (The man proposes, and then both of them go looking for matching engagement rings) it would make me smile if he proposed with like a ring pop or something silly like that :P I´d enjoy the hell out of that xD That´s not like him though, so I´m hoping for the other type :P

To be completely honest, I've adored a certain engagement ring for years. Even though I completely agree with all of you about what a sweet gesture it is to have your guy pick out a ring and everything.. I really like that ring. My SO knows this and I actually think he's somewhat relieved that he doesn't have to worry about picking out a ring haha.

We looked at rings and decided what kind we were going to get together. We're a little ways away from getting engaged, but I know he has already bought the ring and are now waiting for the right time to tell the parents and for them to give us the go ahead. He did not want to pick out a ring on his own because I don't wear ANY jewelry, so he has no idea what I would like. To be honest, I didn't know what I would like either, so I'm glad we got to talk about it and decide together.

Damn, I'd love to know what my girlfriend wants, but I wanted to surprise her. I have an idea of what she likes and what her dream to be proposed is, but the ring plays a big role on surprising and it makes a huge impression. I've surprised her with a bracelet that she loved and everyone thought it looked really sophisticated and expensive, but the ring has to be more. I can't afford, neither she likes a big rock, but it has to be something that at least LOOKS expensive. And silver, because I don't like gold and we need matching rings. Or not? I don't know whhat the tradition is... Over here we don't get engaged with a ring, or maybe we do... GAH, I know nothing of weddings, mainly because I never thought of it... I feel so weird even talking about it publicly.
One day I'll just have to talk to her about it. Not that we never talked about it, but it was never a plan...

I actually started this same thread a couple months ago
I would like him to surprise me. He's never gotten me any jewelry so I don't know if he has good taste or not... but he knows I like funky, original things. He knows I'm not diamond crazy and certainly don't want anything big. I also wear all yellow gold, so he should know to get me that. I've never showed him any rings that I like, so who knows. But I think I'd like just about anything small (preferably flat with no diamonds) and in yellow gold

He and I looked at different rings for about a month before he proposed. One day when we were looking, he said that he picked about 5 rings that he though I would like that he could afford. He showed me the five rings, and together we narrowed it down to 2 rings. I told him, however, which one was my absolute favorite. It was the one he ended up buying. He completely surprised me when he proposed!"I'll hold you in my heart till I can hold you in my arms again."
