BBM is pretty cool though, lets me keep in contact with my sister super easy.
In my Googling, it looks like you can only convert apps to the OS on their tablet (the Playbook), and not the phones.

What app is it? I'm a BlackBerry to Android convert, so I might remember if there's a BlackBerry version or not.

For sure go for a smartphone. I´d recommend the same as him (if he has an android or an iphone, get the same system). If you have the choice though, go iphone. I am not a big fan of Apple, but there are a LOT of LDR related apps that I want on my android that are only available on iphone right now.

I hate blackberries, I think they are only good if you text a lot :P But that´s just me, I know a lot of people who love them. But you´ll get many more fancy apps and stuff on Iphone/Android

Just saw this comment. Although I am in Canada, I would guess costs wouldn´t be that drastically different. I have an android, but I just don´t pay for data on it. I use wifi only, and it gets me by just fine. I can use pretty much every app as long as I am in a hotspot (which are surprisingly common). My phone was free under contract, and I pay 35$ a month for unlimited canada wide everything with 10 people, and then unlimited texting and 200 minutes besides that.

My SO and I both have Droid Razrs. He's on a cheaper plan than I am (we're in Australia so it's a bit different to the USA) and gets less call time than I do but we both get unlimited text messages, picture messages and social network internet usage. We both can use the Pair app (it's now cross platform with Andriod and iPhone for those that don't know) and we can both use Skype on our phones. I use my phone with headset to fall asleep on Skype with my SO as the earbuds are so much more comfy than a headset. I have wireless internet at home (so does he) so that helps as well.

Pair is now on Android?! YOU JUST MADE MY LIFE.

ETA: Though I kinda called it. My SO and I knew that by the time it came to Android we would most likely not need it anymore (we're scheduled to close the distance next week), though we could use it this week lol.

Just because you're closing the distance doesn't mean you can't send him a thumbkiss at work or something or another. It's still good :P

When I needed a new cell phone back in September, I also was thinking about what kind to get. Personally I liked the old-model where you can punch messages into the phone, but it was very limiting for the communication needs that my SO and me have. So, an android I got. I'm still satisfied with it, but the next time I'll need a new one, I'm going to get an iPhone. It's nifty!

I've bittn the bullet and got a smart phone. I liked keeping my old phone on my hip but haven't figured out a way to do that with my smartphone. I mainly got the smartphone because it's got andriod and I can get language software so I can learn Romanian while I'm out and about. (My SO's home language is Romanian).

I have an Android phone and my partner has a Blackberry, which isn't ideal - we can't use many of the same apps. Pair, for instance, would be nice, as would Google Talk or Google+. But neither of these feature on Blackberry. We've settled on Skype, but it isn't that reliable on the go, particularly for her. We often just email one another from our phones, which works well as they're both good phones for email.

I'm in need of a new phone, but we're not sure if I should switch to Blackberry or if she should change to Android! One thing that is fairly good is my network - 3 in the UK are great for data, it works all over the place and the speeds are fast enough to chat on Skype on the move.

iPhone all the way. The apps are great there are a few games that you can play together and the icebreaker app is neat to share. Plus we send photo's of what we are wearing or what we are doing. It is neat!

Get an iPhone or an Android phone! There are a lot of apps out there that will work for you... But just a tip, Skype usually works better in iOS than in Android. I have an iPod and a Samsung Android phone and Skype always hangs up on my android. So if you're more of a Skype user, I think it's better if you go with iPhone.

I'm buying a new Android phone though and keeping my iPod as my 'exclusive' gadget for my LDR. I use it to play games with my SO, Skype with him and text him in Viber.

I'm on Sprint. It's definitely nice because you don't have to worry at all about going over minutes (calls to/from any cell phone carrier are unlimited, and I make the majority of my calls to cell phones). The data is not as fast with Sprint as some other carriers, although it is unlimited, which is great for smartphones.

I would say that if you can both get smartphones with the same operating system (iphone or android), you'll have the most options for communicating with each other.

The cellphone/mobile doesn't really matter, many like BBM are free messages to each other or Iphone facetime is free, dependent on internet etc. Best way would be a international simcard (Lycamobile for example) great deal and ANY phone

I have virgin mobile. You can get an unlimited talk, text and internet plan for your phone for just $55 which, is pretty good. Most other companies will charge you an arm and leg for unlimited plans like that. I think Cricket has something similar as well. Both companies don't have great coverage but, if you don't travel much besides going to see your SO of course then it should be okay. Also, with virgin mobile when you go out of their coverage area I believe you switch over to Sprint's towers.
