MSN usually, but if there's a problem with it (like when it randomly decided not to let one of us log in), we use Yahoo Messenger. Neither is perfect, but it works. I still miss the drawing option on the last version of MSN and have no idea why they got rid of it.

Facebook chat most the time as we both have access to it at work.
Sometimes Skype, but we don't like to over use Skype as it makes it more special when we do~McNab

Smartphone users Whatsapp is a godsend for texting. Then again I recently discovered Google Voice and got a US # so its much cheaper than paying for skype credit...although no face chat, but its better than not being able to talk to each other I think on a regular basis.

We use Google Voice for calls and IMs which is much cheaper than phone cards when we are abroad and I have an android, so I use gmail/google voice for IM instead of texting, we do not have texting on our phone plan (we are on the same family plan so calls to each other when in country are free) and we use Gmail video chat...though we both have Skype, we don't use it with each other, but we both use it for our families abroad. Though my SO has Google Plus to talk to his family in Turkey, I am going to get that too, to see if that works any better, but we seldom have problems with the video chat (unless I do it from my phone, which freezes up).
If anyone has not used Google Voice...I highly recommend you check it out. In US and Canada calls and texts are free. Typical international calls are around US$0.14 per minute...to Central America, South Africa and Turkey (sorry, these are the only countries I have called thus far). It is so easy to use, you pick out a phone number (sorry non-US folks, I don't know how the international numbers work, but I am pretty sure most countries offer some sort of version) and then you make a call from your PC, it calls whatever number you choose, so it is an incoming call (my cell does not charge for incoming calls) and you can add more credit to your account via debit and credit cards. Works really well on I phones and androids as well...you can call right from your phone and it automatically knows to use your google voice account rather than dialing direct internationally. IM's on android and iphones are slick too.
Not to mention you can control your voicemail from your PC and have a special voicemail for your SO and anyone else you choose. Wow, I feel like I secretly work for Google...no really, we have really liked using it.
