Text messaging - I have an iPhone & Kyle has an android phone. We have been on Skype alot more lately on our downtime because I would just rather see his face and have a conversation rather than seeing a text or talking on the phone.

MSN here, but unhappy with the latest version so we found a walk around it. We're both using MSN 14 and as all msn users know you're practically bullied in using the latest version. So we both got 14 from oldversion.com and used this guide to trick msn we're using their latest version https://www.mydigitallife.info/how-t...-force-update/
Used the 3rd method with ResEdit Resource tool

We both are gamers so we used Ventrilo/Steam chat to talk for awhile and then moved onto Oovoo and then Skype. I liked Oovoo so much better, but hardly any of my friends use it so I switched over to Skype.

Whatsapp is an AWESOME app to send texts for free to anyone living anywhere. It runs on multiple platforms - Iphones, blackberry, Androids, Nokia, Windows Phone
And it sometimes is free in the app store, just gotta get it during the right times. if not its only a dollar.

another awesome app is Pair. I'll just copy their quote on their website.
"Pair is an app for just the two of you. Texting, sharing,
videos, photos, sketching together, thumbkiss and more."

its free and is available for iphones and androids. oh and did i mention its free?

geez, i sound as if i'm advertising for these apps. hahah I just believe these apps help keep LDR couples connected

Skype (almost exclusively) but failing that, Facebook chat or Steam.
Skype videocalling is typically how we spend our days/evenings (when I'm not at work and he's out of college that is) and since he doesn't have a smartphone, it's texting if we're both out all day.

Though my SO has Google Plus to talk to his family in Turkey, I am going to get that too, to see if that works any better, but we seldom have problems with the video chat (unless I do it from my phone, which freezes up).
So to follow this up, I got the Google +, I am not happy with the video chat, the quality is greatly reduced, a lot of bugs. Both my SO and I are disappointed. The worst part, for some reason, upgrading caused some sort of a bug in our regular gmail video chat and it no longer works! Anyone had that problem?
I know G+ has nice perks for chatting with multiple people in hangouts, but we just want to be able talk to each other. So...that said, I am re-reading all the comments again to try something new!

Me & my hubby use Skype but to be quite honest with you it's a pain in the butt. It constantly freezes and the sound goes too. I'm not sure if it's Skype playing up or our computers but it's all we've got.....

It's always been IRC, since day one. I don't log on any chatroom/channel, I just go there to talk to him. I love the simplicity of it. We tried MSN and Gtalk but weren't that comfortable with either.

For video chatting we use Skype.

We mostly use Skype, but it all started on yahoo instant messenger so we like to use that too.

She and I use Yahoo Messenger. We've used it since day one and now its because kind of "our" little place because neither of us really chat with anyone else on there. So when I see my little Yahoo icon flashing, I know it's her!

WhatsApp most often. We're always on the lookout for something better as it goes down every once in a while and the notifications are often late or don't even come. But truthfully, it's still the best iPhone messenger out there. At the moment we're trying out a new app called Avocado, it's pretty sleek, although still lacks some features - but lets give it time. We used Pair for awhile and loved some of its features - namely doodling. But it's become so bug ridden and slow, and we can't even load the gallery anymore so that's out of the window now.

For phone calls we use Viber, for video calls FaceTime. Skype was often too unreliable.
