Have you guys tried using skype or something similar? If you have a mic or a headset that can hook up to a computer then you can use it and I believe all calls are free. You could also try googling things that you can use to make free international calls. I believe with long distance calls it's whoever calls that actually gets charged, but I'm not sure on that one. Hope I helped some

Whomever is calling is the one who's charged for the phone call, depending on their plan. For example, my boyfriend can call my mobile phone on his dollar, but if I use up and surpass the minutes that I have available - at this point I have so many roll-over it's not even funny, but without roll-over minutes I'd have 450 a month - then I'm the one paying for those minutes. So if you're calling a mobile, so long as he has enough free minutes to talk to you, he won't get charged, i.e. if he has 450 minutes and you talk 200, for example, he won't get charged whereas if he has 450 minutes and you talk for 500, he will. Not sure if that clears it up any.

As far as ringing a home phone, I would definitely look into that as well. I use AT&T and am able to call landlines for much, much cheaper than mobiles -- an example being it costs me almost $15.00 per hour to ring his mobile but I can ring him on his landline and talk for three hours for $15.00 or less. This is in part due to a plan that I'm on. It's $3.99 a month and brings both the cost of calling a mobile down and what it costs to call a landline, so I'd look into what your service provider can do to help you get cheaper rates on ringing people internationally. Other than that, I'd try calling landlines before I would mobiles.

Finding the PL Phone, I don't have time to Google it, but plugging it into Google should bring it up; I've personally never heard of it. However, Skype is a relatively reliable program, it's free, and also, you can call people out from your computer to their mobiles or landlines using Skype credit, and I believe it's even cheaper than ringing from a mobile or home phone.

Buy him a magicjack, the first pay is US$40 and he use it for one year withno more payments, every extra year is $20 more, so you just pay that only once a year, that is super cheap and im almost sure it includes canada, but check on their web... if not just use skype, if both of you have it is free

Skype is the most reliable and high-quality program out there, and it's free! You can put credit on it and use it to call his phone for pretty cheap rates (depends on country) or even get a flat monthly subscription to his country (that's what I do and it's really cheap). There are ways around the super-expensive international rates nowadays.

Also, I can't say enough that a webcam is a great investment if you're in an LDR, and they aren't very expensive now if you're not capricious about having the best one ever. If you both have one of those, you can chat on Skype for free and even get to see each other!
