I think this is good for couples who have 5-8 hours time difference.
My boyfriend just went to Asia and I'm in Europe, we have 7 hours time difference. We normally talk once in my afternoon/his evening so I get to say good night to him. Then when I'm about to go to bed at 12 later that day, I call him to wake him up (7am there). I think this is really a good idea as he can also say good night to me everyday.
I think most girls want to do all kinds of things in a LDR which is definitely sweet, but some guys may not be that "creative". Some easy and little things to do as a routine might be very helpful in this situation. Well, I'm very new to LDR myself so a lot to learn actually

I wish I could do that (only 1h time difference though) but my SO always turns off his mobile for the night. Yesterday morning I was trying to call him but it kept going to the answering machine.
Later he called me and was really worried why I had called him like 7 times
