My sister B and I are dying to see each other, and I would really like to see my family, but that just doesn't seem financially feasible by car or plane right now. Then I remembered Amtrak. For around the price of one plane ticket, I would be able to travel there and see the family for a couple days, and travel back with her (she's 16 and hasn't traveled alone before) and pay for her round trip too. My mom is getting on board with the idea, and suggested that maybe she (or the whole family--her, dad, youngest sis) could come to WI to see Aaron and me, our apartment, the town and travel back with B so she wouldn't have to be alone (that was the one hitch in this plan). One issue is that I am having some problems with finding a station to depart from in WV, so I may have to look to VA...
So, I need real accounts of what Amtrak is like. I am a little nervous about traveling alone to WV, and I am 22 and have traveled alone before (Greyhound to see Aaron), especially since one of the stops is in Chicago. What is a trip like? To our destination will be 23 hours. How safe is it? Greyhound was a mixture, but a little rough. What should we pack? And just about any advice or experience you can offer! Also, on the site they mention hotels and rental cars...When are those necessary, on any long trip?
