Internships in the US/ J1 visa

I'm having loads of trouble when trying to apply for internships in the US. Does anybody here know anything about it? One of my main issues is that most companies want really specific degrees, eg. a marketing degree for a marketing firm, or a hospitality degree to intern in a hotel. I'm also worried that this is an issue for the J1 visa.

My other concern is that some companies seem to only accept students, or even students who can accept college credit for the internship.

I'm just so confused as internships in the US seem to be so much more complicated than here. The J1 visa also contains so many rules and exceptions and it's making my head all fuzzy! It's clear to me that they're being as strict as possible so that not many people will actually fulfill the requirments. But I really want to give this a go so that me and my SO can close the distance (at least for a while!)
    Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Can you tell us what type of internship you are looking for and what your background is (degree? or experience?)

eeerm I went to the US on a J1 visa last year- one of the conditions is you can't work for more then 20 hours a week, and I think even then you have to be employed on campus, I'm not sure if an internship counts as a job though?

I would go on visajourney.com and ask on the forums there- someone there should be able to give you the info you need.

I'm mainly looking for something in PR/Marketing, although I started applying to hospitality jobs because i thought i might have a better chance with a big company like Marriott. My degree is History with German. The thing is, I think Uni is something completely different in the USA; people seem to get degrees directly related to what they want to do. I applied to a company that are looking for an 'International Business Intern' with a knowledge of Europe/European languages, so I thought that it looked ideal for me. But I looked on the site again and I think it's only aimed at students. I was really close to getting an internship with a childrens' museum but as soon as I mentioned needing a visa they stopped contacting me

I tried visajourney.com a couple of months ago but only got 1 response to my question, which was 'Nebraska? Seriously?' Helpful :/

I was going to apply for a J1 Visa. As I understood it and as I was told by immigration agencies, it is only for students or if you have graduated in the last year...I think. You might want to double check that on a more specialized forum?

As someone applying to internships for my second MBA, I can say that almost all the ones I apply for state "must be a current student or graduated within the last 6 months".

I can't help with the international/visa issues, but for the ones I am looking at (sports marketing, sports sales and promotion) they are not looking to sponsor.

Yeah from what I have read so far there are different restrictions for the J1 visa, the big one being you're expected to be a student or graduated very recently. You can only work a number of hours, the visa only lasts a certain amount of time and something else about how much you're paid. Have you tried looking into other types of visas that you can work in the US temporarily on?

^^^ there went any unless your highly specialised. (is 10yrs experience in a niche field with umpteen degrees and such)

However if anyone discovers differently please do let me know!

I'm guessing that it'll be hard to find internships who are also willing to sponsor. It's the same everywhere right now...to put it bluntly: it's rare that they would go through the extra effort to hire someone needing a visa when, in this economy, they have plenty of qualified people without the paperwork hassle.

I think in general that people in the US try to get a degree directly related to their career. They may change fields later on but I assume that most people applying for jobs/internships, who have just graduated, are applying to jobs related to their degree.

Sorry! I wish I had better advice. Try looking around visajourney again...maybe someone has a similar problem?

Yeah, I thought of this too, which is why I'm trying to find jobs where being english is actually an advantage.

I guess the only thing for me to do is just keep on trying, it's just so frustrating!

I think your main problem is you are looking for an internship in something you never majored in. My ex (from chile, but studied in Canada) was looking at internships in the US and the only ones he could get were the ones that focused on his major otherwise he was told that he can't get the internship. I've had other friends from different countries apply for internships as well and it was the same thing for them they could only get the ones that were focused on what they majored in.

Typically internships in the US are a way into a career in one's field. That is they are a step between schooling in a field and working in that field. So I think most companies will want someone with experience that they might want to hire on in the future. Then again, I'm sure there are also some positions that may be more open. You'd definitely just need to look around and apply to many.

Something also of note, in the United States it is technically illegal to just provide college credit credit for an internship. Some sort of monetary compensation must be offered. Although, that being said, it is usually not much.
