IMO, Age is just a number, like a shoe size.
I think we look at how mature we are, rather than the number of years we've been breathing.
If it's legal, and you're happy, how does an number matter?

17 and 21 isn't really bad. The age is just right, I don't see anything wrong (unless your parents are against your relationship) just make sure you don't leave any trace that will lead anyone to think that you two are having sex (if you are, which I highly discourage at your age).

Actually in the US, it's also illegal to send pictures in any provocative manner or talk about sex in any form.
