Just read the entire thread. LOTS of couples with an age difference with female being older. NEVER did I dream in a million years I would be marrying someone a decade younger...but he is my dream come true. I am 44 (just turned...first time writing that!!)...and he is 30....
Agreed about some of the younger members' issues... Started to wonder if I was on the wrong site. I'm actually 27, my boyfriend is 35, and most of our friends are in their 30s.
I'm with you! The first posts I read (asking for advice) mentioned "school" and significant others who are moving away for college or students having to go home after spending a semester abroad... All of which is making me feel very old! I had to stop myself from jumping into the thread with the somber yet realistic advice of, "Well, you're both so young," or "Try being single before jumping into a serious relationship at such a young age," or "Honey, there's a whole WORLD of men/women out there, you should sample some of some of 'em before tying yourself down at 19!!"
I'm 33 and though I now yearn to settle down with my SO, with kids and a golden retriever, I'm glad I had my dating phase and -yes- even the painful heartbreaks during my twenties. However, now that I'm creeping away from early 30s to mid 30s, sometimes I can't help but break down to the stark reality that perhaps a LDR may not be best for my sanity or rapidly drying ovaries.
Sigh... Perhaps I'll get into that in a different post as I could sure use some advice from people in the same(is) situation of the same(ish) age!
I'm glad I joined this forum and look forward to exchanging ideas with everyone!
Never noticed this thread until it was bumped today - but yeah, I too have had a kind of knee-jerk reaction to some posts by the younger forum members just like Smelly Cat describes. Being a mom I can totally see things from their parents' point of view, but I do remember what it's like to be so young and I also know what it's like to be in a LDR. So yeah I just refrain from replying because I don't want to encourage them to upset their parents AND I don't want to come off sounding like an old fart either.
I'm also in the over 30 crowd; my husband and I are both 31, only three months apart in age, and he is relocating temporarily for a career advancement.
The first time we did long distance was when we met in college - it was definitely a different set of problems. ;o)
I am 49 and my LDR is 46. I've been divorced for 4 years and he is just wrapping up his divorce although they have been legally separated for about 4 years. Yes, very hard for me to relate to the "going away to college" thing as I went to community college, lived at home and graduated at 19.
im in a LDR recently, though its only been closed to a month. im a divorcee with a daughter 5 years old. My SO is a divorcee as well but no kids. Im 33 and he is 38. I look young for my age (as i have a small body frame..petitie asian) Most people think im not married until i show them my identification card. My SO also ask me this question; whether im ok being with an older person. Though i reassure him that i love him and not bothered about it. He still brings it up now and then (in a hypotechnical way) like if i had a younger guy will i choose him... how do i reassure my SO that the age does not matter?

I don*t think 5 years is a big difference in your age. It*s 5 years, not 15!!!! I don*t think he*s older compared to your age! So, why do you two think about age???? To reassure him, tell him that all the time you spend to talk to him and the attention you give him have got to mean something right from your part??? I think it*s a little early to talk about love in your case, but he must see the effort, committement and sincerity you put in the relationship. I f he continues to ask the same question over and over again than he has some issues from his past which are not yet healed and that is why he is feeling insecure.
Just getting around to posting in here.. Glad i found this one! As mentioned in my posts before there is quite an age difference between my SO and I.. That, I see after reading this thread is not as uncommon as I had thought. Not really sure how i feel about the "cougar" term.. Its never really come up between my SO and I.. If that makes some think I'm a "predator" so be it. lol my SO doesn't seem to mind being hunted!!
I'm 46 and he is 26.
My SO is 40 and I will be 40 in dec. we are dealing with children. He got out of army and moved bk to michigan to see his kids and now we are deciding does he come bk or do I move there but I have one that will be graduating this year. One that is a freshman and one a seventh grader ugh what to do
