My native language is German, and I learned English in school.
His native language is Spanish, he also learned English in school.
So we both speak only English as the same language!
But even before I met him, I studied 5 semesters of Spanish at university, which was perfect, because I went for an exchange year to Mexico to be with him and I really needed that bit of Spanish I knew.
My boyfriend spent one semester here in Austria, also as exchange student, but unfortunately he didn't learn a lot of German here..

I speak fluent English and Welsh, with a slight knowledge of French and I know a few words of Spanish, my old so knows English and some French, German and Spanish. He sometimes accents his words slightly differently to me though, due to his hispanic inheritance and American accent, and I sometimes get teased for saying words slightly differently to him. I say vitamins completely differently to him for example I get the fun teased outta me like you wouldn't believe when I say it like I've brought up how to lol.

I'm jealous! In school my SO always skipped his Welsh classes...so knows enough to figure things out...but I think anything more than simple conversation would cause his brain to explode. His sister and parents, however, have a little more strength in the language. I would LOVE to learn it, but since HE doesn't even know it I don't want to seem like a total tool...haha....but I've always loved languages. When I was out there I had him teach me a few phrases but...in 8 months have since forgotten them >.<

Clearly my SO and I speak English to one another, though I *used to be* really good with Spanish...but like they say "use it or lose it." :/

Puh, my native language is german and in austrian sign language. On top of it, I'm fluent in spoken and written English. My SO on the other hand is native in afrikaans and in afrikaans sign language. He is not bad in English, but not on the same level as me. We mostly communicate in a really weird Mix&Match of austrian and afrikaans signs while using the english lip image. We're currently trying to learn each other's native tongues. It's slow, but we're getting there.

Both my SO and I speak english but its funny that we use different words and sayings the other wont recognize. I'll say things that he says must be a Californian thing, and he'll say things in an Oklahoman way.

              Finding myself.

We both speak American English, same accent/dialect and everything. Makes sense seeing as we're from the same town lol.

I am from the UK, and my boyfriend is from Sweden, his native tongue is Swedish but he is fluent in English. He was a bit dodgy on his English when we first met, but he is much better now! I would even go as far as saying his spoken and written English is good enough to rival my own.
I am trying to learn his language bit by bit, but it is really hard for me because the Swedish make such strange noises! I love hearing him and his family speak to each other, it's great making fun of how they sound :P It's weird listening to a conversation though, because they use English phrases a lot and it is confusing for my brain!
I am hoping to go there next year to learn to speak Swedish too, I would love to be able to share that with him too.

Gah, language issues have cause SO MANY problems with us. Since my native language is English, and his is Spanish. Even though he can speak English fluently, he doesn't understand American humor sometimes. We manage though, it's fun when he doesn't know a more complex word, and I have to explain it. It makes me feel smart. I'm learning Spanish too, but so far I've only been taking classes for 2 years in high school, so I can carry on a conversation about as well as a 3-year-old.

We both speak American English, and largely with a Minnesota accent. Sometimes something from Iowa will pop into his speech, and once in a while something I say gives away I was born in North Carolina (and it's where I learned to talk). But we both have been in MN for a long time now. He's in Missouri for school now though, maybe he'll pick up some weird sayings there

My native language is Dutch, his native language is Maltese but in Malta they have 2 official languages: Maltese and English so we speak English. At this moment I am doing a course to learn Maltse. But it's really hard! It has Arabic infuences.

His native language is English, mine is German. He's currently taking German classes at university though and his German is quite good already. When we first started dating his parents asked him on the phone how we communicated and if we used some sort of sign language or something...

My native language is English and my husband's native language is Farsi (Persian). He speaks English fluently and I speak Farsi decently. I'm still working on it!

My native language is English and his is French. He speaks English near-flawlessly (he's lived in both the UK and the US), my French is good but not quite fluent. The majority of the time we chat online and speak to each other on Skype in English, which sort of disappoints me--I'm currently in the process of applying to graduate programs in France, and I'm very nervous that my French isn't up to par. However, my SO is getting his PhD in computer science and a good command of English is very important, so he always wants to speak to me in English in order to keep up his skills. He's also a mumbler and uses a lot of slang, so he's very difficult to understand in French (I thought it was me, but, I could understand his mom and sister perfectly, so I knew then that it was him, haha! ).
