Her native language is Creole(cape verdean) and mine is English. But we're both fluent in Spanish and English. she also speaks Portuguese and French quite well. And my German is a bit rusty.

My first language is Finnish, his is Welsh and we talk in English. He's obviously as good as a native speaker cause he's from the UK lol.

It's quite funny how some of his relatives kept asking him when they first found out about me; "so, how do you communicate? Does she speak any English?" and he was like "nooo, she doesn't speak English but I've secretly studied Finnish for a year.." duh!

I met a couple here in CR that was married for like 15 years and had a 12 year old daughter. The husband spoke the worst Spanish I've ever heard and the wife didn't speak a word of English. The daughter translated everything for both of them. Odd couple that was...

How did they communicate before their child learned to speak??

My boyfriend's aunt was the same though. She emigrated to Germany in the 80's (I think?) and got married to a German guy, although she didn't speak any German, he didn't know Polish and they didn't have any other common languages. I wonder how that worked out... she's a widow now, though so maybe it didn't work out all that well after all.

Now that I think about it, no one ever wondered how my boyfriend and I communicate I guess everyone knew I was crazy enough to learn Polish before I met him.

My mother tongue is English and his is French. He speaks English almost like a native - my French is awful in comparison, although I do understand more than I can speak. We chat in English all the time, apart from when I pay him a visit in Paris and can't get away with not practicing my French at all I'm joking, it's a good thing really! I do want to learn, I'm just not as linguistically gifted as my SO (who is also above fluent in Spanish, and in the process of learning German, Italian and Catalan).

My SO's native language is English, and mine is Dutch. Luckily, I started learning it when I was 11 years old, so by the time I met my SO I had a pretty good knowledge of his language, and we could communicate just fine. I think he only helped me improve, and hooked me up with an American r and l that everyone comments on now... You copy people's accents so easily! I kind of like it though

My SO and I both speak English.
However, the funny thing is that we are both originally from NY, I have a VERY heavy NY accent.
He never really did but, since he moved to FL YEARS ago I can so hear the difference in his accent. lol
He makes fun of mine LOL

My native language is English and my SO's native language is Czech, but he doesn't like speaking Czech and calls English his native language if anyone asks! So we communicate in English most of the time, but sometimes he might say something in German and I will reply in Swedish - he took German GCSE and I am currently living in Sweden so know quite a bit of the language!
No time zone or distance or anything can keep us apart

I'm native Bulgarian and he is Polish. We are fluent in English so we communicate in English. I learn Polish now though, as my fourth foreign language. God, if I knew I need to learn it one day ...... would never chose it on my own

Yup, we both speak English. I'm American, and he's Irish, but we definitely have moments where one of us will use some slang term, and be like, wTF?, and have to explain. :P He uses all these little aphorisms, like, "I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crisps," which basically means, "Damn, she's hot! I'd do her!" and I love teasing him about them/using them at inappropriate moments. hehehehehe

I laughed hysterically when I read this!

My SO and I are both American and English is our native language. I am close to fluent in Spanish, but he doesn't know another language. It is my life goal to learn Italian and French too! I took Italian 101 and 102 in college and kept my books, so maybe after grad school I'll try to actually learn it. My SO wants me to teach him Spanish, but so far he's not really picking up on it. Of course he only remembers the inappropriate words and phrases.
