Good for you!
My SO is very curious about my Turkish. I understand more than I speak. I know a lot of words but the grammar is slower. I am less shy as the time goes by, though. Sometimes I dream in Turkish sounds.
His Norwegian is worse than my Turkish, he can only say phrazes like "You are the most beautiful girl in the world ".Last edited by differentcountries; May 28, 2014, 01:22 PM.I made love to him only twice, she thought and looked at the man laying asleep beside her. And yet still it is as if we have been together forever, as if he has always known my life, my soul, my body, my light, my pain

That is so cool! Congratulations
My SO speaks almost fluent English, so we converse in English at the moment, but I am trying to learn Swahili. It's very difficult mind you, there aren't many learning aids out there for Swahili, I contacted the School of African and Oriental Studies in London requesting what they could help me with, but they wanted to charge me £70 an hour just for very basic lessons! I think I'll stick to the phrasebook and the internet for the mean time If anyone knows of any good webpages that also do some of the more obscure languages, please let me know!
I know a few words already, and have texted him some goodnight messages in Swahili before. When I visited him on New Years I managed to crack a joke (albeit a one-liner) in Swahili which caused the room to explode with laughter, and earn me some serious girlfriend points. We hadn't been together long at this point, so I think it went down well that I was trying.
I'm hoping that I can speak a few clumsy sentences before he gets here to visit my family, as it would be lovely to surprise him. But well done to you (and everyone else) who is already well on their way there.

My SO speaks English but has learned Chinese at adult age so there is hope that he will learn Finnish, too! My ex, also American was living here for 16 years and learned his Finnish okay. He doesn't really need it anymore. Shame language skilled cannot be transferred between persons... but luckily my kids speak both languages so that's at least good for them to learn to know each other.
