Hey guys, more of a throwing it out there thread for you again, but I figure due to potential visa application waiting times its never to early to research.
So my girl is going to University next year (i.e. moving out of state etc), and the ideal plan is to try and spend the 2nd year living with her, with the potential for her to study abroad here during her third year. No plans set in stone or anything, just an idea we both put forward and one we'd love to be able to make happen.
The study abroad year for her would be no problem as we've looked and a good few University's near me do international study year schemes compatible with her Uni. So thats no problem providing she would want to come over for a year.
The issue is trying to work it the other way, me spending an extended time over there. I guess my options are;
- Attempt to find a job there/work abroad scheme that'll let me stay for up to 18 months. Possible I guess, but would absolutely have to be within commuting distance of her (and via public transport likely as well, which I know isn't so good in the US) which limits that a fair bit.
- Visitor Visa. As far as im aware, there is a visa (B2 or something) that would allow me to stay for up to 180 days? I believe I read that can be extended too. The issue being I wouldn't be able to work, and I think you have to prove you have the financial means to cover yourself.
- Apply for a course at the same Uni. I guess is possible? It would be a masters (as I graduated this past year). The main issue here being passing application and having the money to pay for the course, and courses are much more expensive there than they are here.
- Just visit often on the VWP. Try to visit close to the 90 day limit if possible as regularly as possible. Downsides being I would have to spend extended periods here inbetween visits, it's all very bitty and wouldn't really work with a full-time job. Possible suspicion from Immigration about how much time im spending there on the VWP.
Just looking for ideas guys. Got a fair bit of time to try and figure something out as the first year she'll be in halls likely, so living with her isn't feasible, so we'd hope to aim for an extended visit for her 2nd year (Sept/Oct 2014 on, a while off yet and this is very forward thinking, but like I said better to be prepared than rush it late!). Like I said just an idea we had, seeing if there's a realistic way to make it possible. Any ideas how we could do it?
