OMG that is an amazing deal! How exciting!
I'm currently searching for a plane ticket to visit my SO over summer as well. I live in Los Angeles and he lives in Germany, so our distance is not that much different from yours.
You found that deal with United? I've just checked their website, but I can't find anything for under $1200

I used kayak to find it and literally had to check every day to see when the prices dropped. I also juggled it between Austin and Dallas airports to see what would be cheaper. just always check the +/- 3 days box and while your inputting it in Kayak shows you this calendar underneath for prices through the month you fly out~ Its random what day the prices are low which is silly!

I read a report once that said that Tuesday is the best time to look for lowest prices. Not the best to book a flight for but when to search for best prices anywhere. It had something to do with the way the airlines managed their schedules. Some say this is true and others have other opinions but an interesting read for sure for us air fare searchers.

Hartford's always more expensive than Boston because it's a smaller airport. If your SO is in CT though, you should check NYC's airports. They're usually among the cheapest in the country, and New York to upper CT (where I see your SO is?) is only a 2-3 hour drive.
Does your SO drive? I'm guessing probably, because public transport in the Ellington area isn't that great.

You can get the MetroNorth train from NYC to Bridgeport, CT (or elsewhere, like Watertown) for like $12 if someone could pick you up from the station.

My mom's a travel agent. This is mostly true. Also, clear your history and cookies when you visit places like kayak. When you search multiple times for the same thing, they put cookies on your computer and up the prices. This is why it seems normal to up the prices over time. This can often help. Checking for random sales is good too. And as always going for more connections over less helps.
