how old are you both?
when are you going to see each other?
and do you think he'll be less angry/sad/disappointed when you tell him in person than when you tell him online?

I did this with my ex! I thought he was creepy when I first met him (through a wrong number haha) so I lied about my name. After we got close, I told him my real name and we laughed about it. But he continued to call me by my fake name, and now all my friends call me that too. You are just going to have to tell the truth, I hope it's not too late. And DON'T wait any longer!

I'd let him know why you said what you did, that you didn't lie for the sake of it, but you were wary of internet strangers etc. (I don't mean to put words into your mouth, but you see what I mean). Really, you'll have to tell him the truth at some point; the longer you leave it the more burdensome it will become to keep the whole thing secret and the worse it will look on you. You're always better off getting stuff like this out in the open as soon as you can.

I go by Claire or Elliotte online. This has meant that when I become fairly close to people, I tell them what my real name is. Even if it likely wouldn't matter if I gave it out in the first place, it's something that I choose not to give out until I've become closer to someone/know that I can trust them or even that we have a friendship that will last. I've been doing this since I was 15, and I so far have yet to have anyone get angry at me for it once I explained my reasoning. While I can't predict how he would react, I do think you have to keep this in perspective. Yes, it's wrong to lie, but it's not like you lied about how you look or where you live or who your friends are; you simply gave him an alias as opposed to your real name. I would tell him before you two have a visit because frankly, you have more of a chance of screwing things up if you tell him when you meet than if you tell him before. One conveys respect and the other conveys desperation, so tell him before you actually solidify your plans.
