I love the idea of a promise ring, and Chris has already been looking at getting me one. We haven't been officially dating very long so the idea of getting engaged is a little too much for our families to think about, but I don't see a problem with a promise ring maybe for Christmas.
It's definitely up to the couple. I wear his high school class ring every day, and he said if he had something of mine to wear to show he's mine, he would. I asked him why he gave me his ring, and he said he likes the idea of everybody knowing I'm his. So promise rings are a definite plan for us in the future, but like I said, it depends on the couple.
