Do you and your SO speak the same native language?

Even though we both technically speak the same language, slang words, rhythm, pitch and even pronunciations can just cause hilarity sometimes. Best example I can think of is the word "Squirrel". I pronounce it so differently that my wife and her family just fall about laughing at me. *shrugs*

I can not say "Water" around Obi's family or they pay me out terribly for it. It's rather annoying now actually. So I have to say "Adams ale on the rocks" or "H2O" to get around it. And even then sometimes they'll hack on me

We have picked up a lot of each other's sayings though. I wish I could stop saying "eh." When I go home people are going to think I'm an uneducated bogan.

My native language is English and his is Norwegian... He is extremely fluent in Norwegian to the point he barely has any accent. I'm slowly but surely learning Norwegian.

my native is english and his is portuguese and while everything was simple in the beginning i notice that when i get angry about any little thing and go to talk to him about it the way he words things make it sound like he is undermining my intelligence and it drives me crazy. the language barrier and the cultural differences are a little tough but we work through it pretty well. I'm trying to learn portuguese to be able to communicate with him better and to be able to talk to his family... It sucks really bad at times because theres specifics in his language that we dont have in english but apparently it would be much more clear if it were in portuguese... like the different types of love... stuff like that. and he can usually say everything he wants in english but lately its been more and more broken and i actually have had to plainly tell him "uh I don't get it... BROKEN ENGLISH!" at least 2 times this week...

We both speak English but I have a very strong Singaporean accent, so he gets a good laugh when I say a word funny and he has to spend 5 minutes figuring out what exactly I was trying to say. I also have pretty awful grammar that confuses him from time to time. He speaks a little bit of Mandarin (my second language), and we use that for simple conversations or when I can't express what I want to say in English. We spoke to each other in Mandarin sometimes around his family and it annoyed them, especially his sister. (;

My SO is from Rio so he speaks Portuguese as a native language, I am learning but we speak English all the time. I can't wait to be able to speak to him in Portuguese though...it's a beautiful language!

My boyfriend is from Michigan so he speaks English. I was born in Peru and lived there for 12 years, so my native language is Spanish. While I was living in Peru my parents put me in an English school so I learned how to speak English when I was a little kid. I moved here to Montreal 8 years ago and went to a French high school, lol... Now I speak the 3 languages fluently but I obviously speak English with my him.

I was born in the dominican republic and so my native language is spanish.However, since i've been living in New York for 18 years English is now my dominant language. My boyfriend is from Argentina and only speaks spanish. At first, it was difficult because although i'm fluent in Spanish.. there were alot of words that i had forgotten because of lack of practice. I could understand everything he said perfectly, but when i had to express myself it was really frustrating.

Id always have to look up the word i was trying to say in an english/spanish dictionary. With time i got back into my spanish rhythm and now we talk no problem.

Well, my and my SO seem to be rather exceptional, since we speak 5-7 languages alltogether (depending on how you count):
I speak Swiss German, High German and grew up bilingually with French. I'm also quite fluent in English, which is the language we use to communicate, although we do have problems to express ourselves in detail sometimes. She speaks two Asian languages, of which I have started learning one, but unfortunately people in her region speak a strong dialect of it. She on the other hand has started learning German and once she's here I will try to speak German to her as much as possible, to speed up her learning.

Yeah, we both speak English and it's our native tongue. Although, he says I have a Canadian accent... I don't think I do because it's not like a maritimes or french accent. He says I say certain words differently and use different words for things. Like he says 'sorry' like SARE-REE and I say it like SORE-REE. And he'll say "soda" and I call it "pop." Sometimes I'll mention something and have to explain it to him because he doesn't use that term there. 'Toque' comes to mind. But yeah, it's all English. We just laugh at it hehe.

We've kinda developed our own language though that I doubt many people would understand half of our conversations. Either that or they'd think we were idiots XD. It's a mixture of snippets from inside jokes, lovey cutesy talk and plain silliness in the form of mispronouncing words. ^^;;

we both speak english. its our native language. but like many others, pronunciation, slang, and random words are different. he has the typical jersey accent. and i seem to carry the boston accent quite heavily. he's always laughing at how i say all my words. like "cah"(car) and "yahd"(yard) etc. dang r's

also, he speaks fluent spanish, and i speak fluent portuguese. so we tend to bare a little bit of those accents as well :]

his native language is portuguese, and we speak english with a few times that we say things in portuguese (I'm learning... rather slow... but still learning!) and then today he was talking to of his friends from where he lives (Brazil) and they speak Port. and she showed him her new guitar and he said (in english) "That is beautiful!" and didnt realize it until she pointed it out that she didn't understand. lmao! WIN! That was the first time that happened to him where he meant to speak port but because he has been speaking english so much lately it came out naturally!

My native language is Danish and Vietnamese, and my fiance's language is English cause he lives in the US. We both speak English to each other, but he's trying to learn Danish and Vietnamese, and I'm trying to learn Cantonese because he's Chinese.

My first language is Italian and for my SO is German. I'm fluen in French, Spanish and English, but I don't know anything about German, so at the moment we can communicate only in English, which is a second language for both of us. Now he is learning Spanish (because it's similar to Italian) and next year I'm starting German!
