Do you and your SO speak the same native language?

I am Russian and my SO is American. He doesn't speak Russian at all so we speak English to each other. Even though my English is decent and I am going to a university in the United States, I still think we have language barrier sometimes in the understanding of certain things. For example for me "friend" doesn't include acquaintances, people from your school or work, or people you jsut met at a party and kinda know but did not get to talk much, or smth like that. Even though I know that in the US the word is used pretty much when talking about any person you know, I still have a hard time with it. I tried many times to explain to my SO that in my language there are different words for different levels of involvement with somebody and you only call a "friend" someone who you really can rely on etc.etc. Same with the word "date". In my language "date" is when two people are in a relationship, they hold hands, look at the moon and very much attracted to each other. All other level of relationship has different words for it. I know here in the US two friends going to lunch would be a "date" and "date" doesnt mean two people are necessarily attracted to each other, or can go on multiple dates and pick and choose who they want to "date" seriously etc. etc. I still have problems with such words when one word applies to so many things nad a ot of times I get confused when we have conversations that involve something like that.

My SO speaks Spanish as her primary language, mine is English. It is funny because when I first met her I could barely understand her, but it was enough to make us fall for one another. Over time her English got better to the point that now it is near fluent. She is now teaching me Spanish and I am helping her learn English so it is beneficial both of us and in a way helps us grow closer to one another since we both must have a stronger level of patience and understanding. Sometimes we may have a small misunderstanding due to the small language barrier and both break out google translator but it is an interesting aspect of our relationship and something that makes it pretty unique. I am surprised there are a handful of others on this forum with the same circumstances lol :P

Sam's English and I'm Finnish so yeah.. our native languages are different. I've loved English ever since I started learning it at school. Sam obviously didn't speak Finnish when we met, so we communicated in English and still do, although after moving to Finland, he started learning my language A bit of a pain in the ass (ok a pretty massive pain in the ass ) for him to learn such a difficult language, and I love him so much for doing it for me/us ♥

Another question for everyone: Do you ever find yourself starting to pick up phrases and speech mannerisms used by your SO?

Oh god, yes. Feels like I've done that loads.. I guess he has too a bit x) Not always necessarily words but some random noises and stuff.. it's quite funny to realise that happens

We're both from the same country but my native tongue is French and his is English. I've known and spoken English since I was at least 5 so I'm fluently bilingual and it's mandatory here to take French in school until 9th grade (at least in this area). Unfortunately, he didn't continue with it so we only speak English but he understands the majority of French and can read it.

Well technically since we're both here in the US, we speak the same language but I'm from the South and he's a New Englander, so sometimes we don't speak the same language at all - He has a funny accent but then he'll tell you I do

We don't speak the same native language. Fortunately, I can speak English well and we communicate in that language. He even jokes about it and tells me that English is my first language even if it isn't.

YES.. my native tongue is tagalog and spanish because i'm fil-spanish (english 3rd only so sorry if my grammar wrong). his language is spanish. his spanish version have little difference to mine in his accent and dialect used but we still understand. actually even i live in philippines, i speak, read and write better in spanish than english so no problemo at all. i'm trying hard to better my english.

I speak English. My SO is bilingual. He speaks English and Spanish. We communicate mostly in English.

We are both American-born English speakers, but his parents, who were both immigrants, raised him speaking mostly German with a little Italian and French. We always speak in English, but sometimes he'll start spouting a bunch of German becuase he knows I have no idea what he's saying. He usually translates it for me, or he'll spell it to me and make me look up what it means online haha.

Mine language is English with a small understanding of Spanish.

He is multi-lingual, but his primary language is French. And while we speak in English, there are times something needs to be explained a little further. He is teaching me French slowly but surely, I can at least pick out words in sentences to gain an understanding even if I may not comprehend completely.

hi, we speak the same languages: English and Filipino.. But, in our country we have lots of dialects. I teach him Hiligaynon and he teaches me Ilokano which is fun.. Especially if he teaches me funny lines words or phrases. XD

My native language is German and my SO's is English. Since his German skills are still on a very beginner-level and sicne I'm fluent in English we always speak in English to each other. He's trying to improve his German though, but it's still not good enough to have a whole in depth conversation Someday....

my SOs native languages are german and russian (his mom is russian so he only speaks russian with her, they rarely talk in german, only when im around) and we started when i knew nothing of german but now i learn german and i get better, slowly but surely, so we talk in english 98 per cent of the time but once in a while we give german conversations a try

No, my native language is English, second language is Italian and third language is Spanish.
His native language is Spanish so we communicate 100% in Spanish. I think in English he knows how to say "yes", "what?" and "wow".

My SO is from Rio so he speaks Portuguese as a native language, I am learning but we speak English all the time. I can't wait to be able to speak to him in Portuguese though...it's a beautiful language!

I have family in rio de janeiro, but im originaly from amazon. you wouldnt think im "an indian"being so white, eh? i guess the german and portuguese descendence i have might have something to do with it.

I'm from London but originally chinese arab and african. I don't speak chinese anymore I forgot it all sadly but I learnt Korean which is my SO's native language but he's from the US. Sometimes I don't understand his slang but I think I'm getting the hang of it. We speak English most of the time but we also speak Korean now and again.
